    Dept of Energy Special Operations

    Hey everybody,

I was doing some research and came across the fact that the DOE has two separate 1811 positions.

    1. OIG Special Agent- Fraud, wase and abuse....

    2. Office of Security Special Agent (under the Special Operations division)- protection and counterintelligence

I was really suprised by this and was wondering if any of you know about the second SA job. It sounds really interesting but I just want find anything about it. Thanks for any info in advance!

Are you sure it wasn't DOE's Office of Secure Transportation ("OST")?

POSITIVE! I've never heard of these guys until this weekend. If you go to the website it's DOE OFFICE OF HEALTH, SAFETY AND SECURITY. Under this is the office of Security Operations. Under the office of Security Operations is the Special Operations division which is in charge of protection of the secretary and dignitaries and intelligence matters. They also have some investigative responsibilities. From what I've gathered, they are separate from the OIG and the website refers to them as "Special Agents". This may be a very small, cabinet level gig but I'd love to find some additional info about it.

I could not find anything other than the Department of Energy was looking for a Supervisory Counterintelligence Officer in their Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence on USAJOBS, but that supervisory position is for a GS-1801-15. The 1801 job series covers the General Inspection, Investigation, and Compliance positions, and I have never seen an 1801 supervise any 1811's.

Could you provide a specific link or links to where you may have gotten your information about their 1811 series?

@RAMEDIRK: Thanks. On their website, the third paragraph under the heading "Functions" provides some insight:

Responsible for all aspects of an investigation including case/quality control, management/oversight, administration, investigation, documentation, evidence collection, and proper termination, including recommending referral to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Department of Justice, or any agency with the proper jurisdiction for subsequent action.
I've boldfaced the applicable parts. Whenever an Agency has to make "referral to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)" for prosecution of their statutes is, at the minimum, an indication they are not 1811's.

    Edit for clarification:

Remember, not all Federal "Special Agents" are 1811's!

Even though this position is not 1811, doesn't DOE have NNSA 1811's or equivalent?

    @explcdt8: Yes, you are correct.

As RAMEDIRK stated when he began this thread, DOE's OIG has 1811's, and as you indicate DOE's NNSA Office of Secure Transportation ("OST") has 1811's:

A Nuclear Materials Courier (sometimes called an OST "federal agent") is not an 1811. Per their brochure, they are a 0084. They work in the transport and security of nuclear materials for DoE. Not a bad gig, it seems, for those interested in SWAT-like training and federal security work, but not a criminal investigator position.

explcdt8: My apologies for the misinformation. I didn't read the OST website as carefully as I should have.

ROS: Thanks for setting the record straight ..... I'm embarassed for not exercising more care in my research!
