You both are good!!!
If you have Google Earth (a free program), you can zoom in much further for additional detail, but I wanted to get the entire base in the picture.
P.S. BTW, that "strip mall" didn't exist when I was last down there to teach in the late 90's
.
If memory serves me, Sally used to have her Cop Shop on Altama (?) Avenue, but knowing Sally she probably still has that location as well as the one in the "new" strip mall across from the Main Gate!
Ah, the memories ..... do they still get that occasional "smell" from the paper factory when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction?; did they get rid of those vicious biting "gnats" that only "skin So Soft" could repel?; Pams, Brogans, Emmeline & Hessies, the "cheerful" bar on base (the word is actually a synonym for cheerful) ..... Well, I don't want to spoil it for the new folks and reveal all of FLETC's charm prematurely.
.
Is FLETC on the grounds of an old airport or somerthing? Or is all that paved area purpose-built for driver training?
Yes and Yes!
1) FLETC has a lot of history. If you talk to the older instructors they share a lot. It was a U.S. Navy Base in WW II that house blimps. Great story how they found a German sub off teh coast of Georgia one night and sank it with depth charges! If you look at the overhead photos, and compare it with historical photos, you can see some of the original paving and structures still stand. The ATF bomb area is actually an old blimp staging circle.

2) The paved area is all new (within 5 years) for driver training. Some was re-paved and other stuff was new.

Yep!
Nope! Only time you see grown men ordering Avon!
Been there....now FLEOA meeting central
Very nice on St. Simmon...and every Friday was bachelorette party night when we were there last year! 5 ladies for every one guy!
Never heard of while there....
We went one time in 5 months. Now called the "G-Bar." The night we went was filled with BOP'ers. After 10 minutes,we left. Too much ego and war stories from professional babysitters.

I figured that place would be shut down by now, so I just got rid of my Always free re-fills mug.
The place looked like a fire trap back in '93 when I was there, with all of the Cop uniform and t-shirts on the wall with car doors complete w/door badges and lightbars. Has it moved or is it still in its stand-alone shack out on ... was it US 17?
Its changed quite a bit since I was there, as well, but then I was only there for 2 weeks on a civilian LEO course.

There is a nice little cafe in the same strip mall as Sally's. Damn good eats and a couple of nice looking servers. ;)
BIG went to Rafters his first weekend in FLETC/Glenco, got into a bar fight with a drunken local (BIG knows, how cliche is that) and never ever returned.
It took BIG 11 years of Federal law enforcement time, to actually make it down to Glenco.
He'd been to Artesia twice, the first time he was in the fourth or fifth BP class to have graduated from there. This was in 95, before it was as built up as it is now. Actually we did our swim training and qualifications, at the high school swimming pool. The second time, BIG was there in 98, for journeyman school.
BIG has also been to the Atlantic City area twice, to conduct his FAM basic and advanced training.

The crud sucks! I've had it for weeks, in addition to sinus infection this past week.
Word to the wise: if you get sick here (truly sick, not just the crud or sniffles), get go the the Health Unit first (because you have to), but then go see a real doctor off campus. I had to do this this past weekend, and got on some antibiotics that are finally making me feel better.
