    A Comprehensive Listing Of Agencies?

Well, after boloing my Phase II interview for the FBI, it suddenly dawned on me that I should have probably diversified my applications a bit more. So now I have the next year to feel sorry for myself, but to get out there and get my resumes and applications to as many LE operations as possible so I don’t kill another year just waiting for another go around. And how much of a schmuck would I feel if I waited this year, went back, and then fail the interview again?

Anyway, I’ve been poking around, and here is the current list of agencies that I’m aware of that have some kind of criminal investigative service that I can apply for (this does not mean I have paperwork ready to go):

    FBI (well, waiting)
DEA (still on their hiring freeze; haven’t sent me an application)
    ATF (unsure)
Secret Service (GS 5-9 for pay? Do they issue you food stamps too?)
    Marshalls
DIA (just found out they have an 1811 series to my surprise, although no one is picking
up the phone at their site)
NCIS (can you join Naval Crim without having been Navy?)
CID (Army; was Army, but not sure of the process)
NASA (whoa, just saw that on the site here, actually)

I’ve heard of border patrol and forestry service or whatnot, but I’m not particularly interested. Is this a fairly comphrensive list of the big criminal investigative services out there? I’m sure there are more…

    Thanks!

You haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg ..... what happened to ICE, IRS-CI, all of the various Inspector Generals, etc., etc.

P.S. Switchback will probably correct you, but US Marshals is always with one "L". You may also want to check ROS' "sticky": Common Federal Acronyms for a better idea of what you missed

As far as I can tell, you're only a hundred or so agencies short.

    Yes.

    You're welcome.
NCIS, AFOSI, Army CID and CGIS all have civilian SA personnel. NCIS is mostly civilian, with some (less than 100) Marine agents. AFOSI is something like 60% enlisted/officer agents and 40% civilian agents. Army CID is overwhelmingly military agents, with a much smaller percentage being civilian agents who mostly specialize in fraud investigations. Not sure about the numbers of CGIS as far as civilian v. military, but I do believe they have a significant number of agents on the military side who are reservists (maybe a Coast Guard member here could provide more details). And as for civilian agent positions with these agencies, no, you do not have to be "in" the respective branch of service to be an agent. You don't even have to have served previously (though many of these agents have served previously).

All agents that are civilian with the military organizations listed above are series 1811, same as agents with FBI, USSS, ICE or whatever other Alphabet soup agency you can name.

Especially if you think the majority of the agencies you apply to are going to start you out any higher than a GS-7 or GS-9.

I've just been on the FBI track so long, I was under the impression that coming in as a 9 and then getting bumped up to a 10 after getting out of Quantico was pretty standard. Little did I know...but then again, this is before I found out that every Mom-and-Pop government organization from the Parks service to the Postal service have investigators in their respective arsenals.

    A learning experience. Thanks again.

    ROS,

CGIS is made up of Civilian, Active Duty, and Reserve members. The rating (MOS, Job, etc) of Investigator is open only to reservist who have been law enforcement officers for AT LEAST 4 years.

Went back through the acronym list, and as I scanned the different organizations out there, it dawned on me that I really didn't specify what I wanted to be doing out there. Yes, there are a hundred LEOs out there, but are their missions something I'm interested in?

I'm interested in investigating crime; and when I say "crime", I mean specialties like homicide, arson, robbery, rape, kidnapping, narcotics, weapons...you know: CRIME. :D

So far as I can figure, the list for that:
FBI, DEA, ATF (the obvious ones)
Secret Service, Marshals, Homeland Security (not so obvious?)
    NCIS, AFOSI (military based crime)

And then it goes back to the regular route: should I just look into local law enforcement and try to go the detective route? And when I say that, I mean I have no idea what that entails, but I have the feeling that it's along the lines of what I'm looking for.

I really appreciate the help in narrowing down my search. So far, have blasted out apps to NCIS, USSS and DIA (already in the chute for FBI and DEA is on hiring freeze).

FYI, BIG has worked smuggling (both of persons and drugs), gangs and now child porn and pedophiles. All of which BIG considered and considers CRIME.

Besides, some of which you named, homicide, robbery and rape. Are handled by state, county and local.

Homeland Security is a department, much like Justice and Treasury, with several agencies which fall under it's authority. One of which is the agency to who BIG belongs, ICE/OI and the other USSS.

Seems you have a lot more researching to do, before you try to commit to anyone.

Okay, checked the acronym list and am not seeing a BIG there. Bureau of the Inspector General (guessing?)...OIG?

As for their perview, investigating the smuggling drugs/guns and gangs/organized crime are right up my alley. Again, among the things I'm looking to get into.

    Keep it coming. Thanks.

    lol

Correct me if I am wrong, but off of a hunch I am going to say that I believe Big Sexy was referring to his name..."BIG". If I am correct he was articulating in the third person.
