    CITP- Physical Fitness

I will attending CITP fairly soon and trying to improve physical fitness....I run now but never for a specific time....I saw the info on FLETC website....is the fitness certificate (75% achievement) a requirement for CITP graduation?....I want to be at the 75% level when I start...any advice on FLETC/CITP is appreciated.

I'm in CITP at FLETC now, about to start Week 5 of 11. The fitness certificate, I believe, is based on the PEB (you can find specifics on the PEB at fletc.gov), which you do twice: on the first week and on the tenth week to measure your improvement. From what I understand, you have to participate in these two PEBs, but a specific qualifying score doesn't exist (some agencies do have qualifying scores, but CITP overall does not).

You may have heard from others who've gone through CITP that the PT is nothing, but let me correct that, as it has changed. The PT here is no joke, get in shape now if you're not. If you are in shape, keep it up. You see, they combined PT and defense tactics into a single session. I can't go into too much specifics on this (you'll find out more when you get here), but it can be a heck of a workout! Also, depending on who you get as a PT instructor, some will work you to the bone, but you'll get a damn good workout while you're here either way most PT days.

That was always BIG's contention. CITP is far from USMC bootcamp, but is far from a joke as well. Keep in mind, if you are a triathlete or something close to that, this may not be the most challenging for you. But you're a freaking triathlete, what did you expect??? ;)

I thought the fit in CITP WAS a joke. The thing is, it is all relative. Our fit in our follow-on, agency-specific training id far mor challenging. Hell, fit sessions were relatively few and far between during CITP... a far cry from the daily sessions in our follow-on.

Like BIG said, you goshdarn triathlete extreme PT studers, need not answer this thread.

Back in his USMC days BIG was a PT stud, since then that damn gunshot and titanium parts he carries around have slowed him considerably. Not that he can't or won't go toe to toe with any mook who wants a shot at the title. ;)

LOL I am hardly a PT stud. All I know, is the fact that we RARELY had fit during CITP speaks for itself.

    Things have changed, my man.

From what I understand and have been told, the PT and DT here is completely different, and that's a recent change. Previously PT was separate from defensive tactics. A student from a CITP class last year told me, "You'll run and do PT maybe twice a week... probably no more than 2 miles." That ain't the way it is anymore. The PT and DT classes have been merged together, so you get PT'ed generally about 5 times a week, sometimes twice in the same day. If you're in good shape (I've been through 2 police academies this year alone, so I felt I was in pretty good shape coming here) you will be exhausted when you get out of ORT (the combined PT/DT classes). If you're not in good shape... pray (seriously, it's not extreme like bootcamp or some state police academies, but you'll be in better shape when you leave than when you arrived, for sure).

Like Big said, if you're the embodiment of all that is genetically perfect in our species, you may find ORT to be like a nice walk in the park, but most students here (and we've got some Marines and former Border Patrol guys in damn good shape) admit that the PT in CITP is definitely challenging, at least currently.

I know several people who have attended recently and all would agree with Ross and Big. From what I understand the PT at CITP has really changed.

Changed in the last month? And he was a skinny, runner type... but certainly not a big workout type. It's been a couple years since I have been there, but I trust this guy's word... and know him well.
    But....hmmm.... uh, ok.

Border Patrol and the Marshals are generally considered to have good fit programs down at FLETC. They do NOT Have mixed classes. As to the others... well.

I found the following link helpful when it came to the FLETC PEB. It talks about each of the PT tests -- way more than what the FLETC website has -- with advice from the instructors themselves that they give to FLETC students just before they administer the test. It's a long article, but it has a section devoted to each of the 5 PEB parts - agility, running, bench, stretch and body fat. I found it really helpful for my time down in Georgia.

Or, coming straight from the horse's mouth:

    Click me.

It's the first link from Googling "FLETC PEB". I would like to think, if you are going to FLETC, you would have figured this one out on your own.

That is 100% correct! Anyone who completed CITP prior to January 25, 2007, was given PT lessons under the old program. All of my office mates explained what a joke and how easy that was.

Upon starting FLETC in February, I learned the hard way. The new curriculum started January 25, 2007, and let me tell you, is no longer watered down. While there is no set standard that must be reached and participation is mandatory, the entire thing is revamped. From the muscle heads to the fat heads, the new program called ORT or Officer Response Tactics (which blends PT and DT into one class) is not comparable to the old program.

There is also a a final exercise at the end of ORT now, called the Gauntlet. 50% of the class (after 11 weeks of PT and DT puke at this event. There are always a few who pass out.

FLETC made a great change in January of 2007, I just hope they stick with it!

The FLETC PEB passing score is 40%. I know the FLETC PEB site doesn't give this value -- only the certificate values.
