    FBI Surveillance Specialist position?

Good day to all. I am just about to take another 0083 position with a new Agency (hopefully) but I am always looking into other jobs if things don’t work out. So the question is this … anyone know anything about the FBI Surveillance Specialist position? How are they treated by the Agents, support personal, other local LE?

The position definetely looks interesting, and I’m sure the night-dif and OT is there, but as we all know overall working conditions and Troop moral is what means the most.

All info and stories are appreciated.

    Be safe.

A lot of info about the SSG cannot be discussed for OpSec reasons. Your best source for intel about this job is to call a recruiter at the nearest FO.

You may wish to also do a search of the intel available at 911jobforums.com.

    Good luck.

I'm also in the application process for the Surveillance Specialist and Investigative Specialist.

I can't tell you much more about the positions than other people have already explained. However, I currently do surveillance full time in the private sector and can give you some advice regarding the rigors of the job.

Surveillance is not easy. It's is very tough mentally, basically because it can become extremely boring and tedious. It also requires abnormal working hours and conditions. I usually need to be on-site, set up with my stationary surveillance position by 5:00 a.m. Since rarely are the location near your residence, often times I travel 1-2 hours. That means I need to wake up between 3:00 a.m. - 4:00 a.m. on a daily basis. Work days are always AT LEAST 8 hours, however I would say the typical day is about 10-11 hrs, but have gone as long as 18 hour days. Now remember, ALL that time is spent inside a surveillance vehicle (minivan tinted windows). Most of my work is done independently but the FBI position is team oriented, which is one of the drawing factors for me. While the vast majority of my surveillance is mobile, I also engage in foot surveillance and have stationary surveillance in a variety of environments (farms, urban surroundings, wilderness, ect.) I do this without a badge so many of these "rigors" would be cured in the SSG positions.

On the up-side, surveillance can be exciting. I still get a rush when I see my subject or target exit his residence or catch my subject engaging in improper behavior.

I always tell people that surveillance is 90% boredom and 10% fear and panic.

If you truely want to go to the SSG, make sure you're aware of what the job entails. I've only been doing this for about 1 year and I already notice that it's taking a toll on me.

It's not glamorous, it's sitting in a vehicle next to a bottle of your own piss and trying not to crap yourself.

I'm sure I sound negative, but overall I don't regret doing surveillance, but it's definitly not a job you do for 20 years.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback, as always anything and everything helps.

I’m currently with Dept of Treasury, but having finished up all the pre-requisites I am looking to join up with a DOD outfit soon. Always looking to keep options on the table though.

I guess I may ask another question while I’m at it …… what’s with this Physical Security Specialist (LESO) ….. Is this like some FPS Security Guard position? It’s a 0080 series, and the money is kinda' all over the place. I guess what I can’t figure out is the following line from the ad:

“As the Contracting Officer's representative, you will carry out inspections to assure compliance with contract specifications. Also, on a regular and recurring basis, you will perform duties as a uniformed law enforcement official under 40 U.S. Code 1315. You will enforce and assure compliance with statutes, laws, building rules and regulations, and protect the civil rights of all persons on Federal property.” …. With no arrest authority?

I did GSA quard work back in the day ….. is that what this is?

Who knows, as always I do appreciate any input you guys and gals can give.

    Be safe.

A COTR or Contracting Officer's {Technichal} Representative is not really a LEO. They manage the contract between the Government and a contractor (security) to ensure the contractor is following the Statement of Work (SOW). While SOME of the COTR's I know are LEO's they don't actively perform those duties, they just manage the contract (lots of paperwork).

Hmmmmm, so did they say they liked the work? Some of my co-workers say it’s a good step into becoming an 1811 …… I guess I should just apply and try to dig for info during the interview.

    Thanks for the input.
