    CBP questions

I am new to the forum and I have a few questions regarding the CBPO position. I tried contacting the hiring center in Minneapolis, but was given one word answers.

What are the prospects for advancement within the CBP? Are promotions based on a test or merit?

    What are the specialized units?

What is the process for overseas assignments?

    Any information would be appreciated.

Just FYI, my sources are telling me the next nationwide CBPO is due out on October 17th. We'll see.

Journeyman grade is GS-11. Promotions are based on both tests and performance. If you don't score well on tests, it can be difficult to make best qualified lists.

Specialized Units are many, for example: K9 units, contraband enforcement teams, passenger analysis units, outbound teams, merchandise enforcement teams, and there are many more depending on where you end up working.

Overseas assignments are available, but you will probably have to attain the journeyman grade first. They include container security assignments and visa officers working with in conjunction with the state department. There many overseas tdy assignments available for various projects or initiatives.

There are more opportunities in CBP now than ever before, but a great deal depends on where you end up working and as always the needs of the service.

    Good Luck,

    LT

    Follow up questions.

Is there anything you can do once on the job to increase your chances to get into K-9? Also, how long is the training and where is it conducted?

Normally, you have to be a journeyman gs-11 to become a K9, but recently I had a new hire be sent to Front Royal. I think that the training is about 16 weeks, but now positive. To increase your chances, I would select ports needing K9 handlers. The new hire I spoke of is in the USVI.

Like LT said you need to be in a port that needs K-9's.

The training is held in Front Royal, Maryland (I think it's Maryland, if not it's VA) anyway and CBP has ungodly long K-9 academy. something like 4 months. I'm sure one of the CBP K-9's here can tell you exactely where and how long the academy is.
