It was a great stepping stone for me and I made some good friends. Most of the guys there were either retired military or law enforcement now that I think of it. My shift was pretty tight as well and I do stay in contact with them. I may even go back when I retire. Who knows? It is not a bad place to be now. I just want to police.

I work for DoD (Dept. of Navy, to be specific). If you have specific questions, fire away or drop me a PM. I'm just a probie about to start training, but have survived the first week of orientation and swear-in.

    DoD Police

I worked for both the Army & navy in the pac northwest. The Army was by far the better agency of the 2. We were treated with respect and like police officers and had other units (AWOL APP, Range Control, Traffic, etc..) and we didn't stand any gates.

The navy was a joke, treated like a security gaurd stood a lot of gates. It might be different at other places and I wish u luck.

I worked for DOD/DON for the Navy as a patrolman for 2 1/2 yrs..

All in all, not a bad job per se...the Naval Base (Kings Bay, GA) had their own contract security guards to do the physical security duties, which left us to deal with speeders, domestics, fights, dui's, shoplifters, accidents etc.. In all honesty, the fact that it was a secure facility weeded out a lot of the bad element from the outside community, but we still managed to stay busy.

Shortly after I left, I understand that the DOD worked some sort of deal that forced the DOD officers to only "respond" to felonies, secure the scene, detain suspects and then call the local county sheriff's office, who would send a deputy onto the military base to take the case, arrest and incarcerate suspects etc....

When I got hired by DOD, I was still on terminal-leave from the Navy, having just gotten out of the Navy and my last duty assignment being billeted for 3 years as a 9545 series Physical Security Specialist and a good stepping stone.. The base was transitioning to "civilian officers" from the military officers, to free them to do "military stuff" and I was a shoe-in. In fact, I drove the exact same car and had the same radio call sign as a DOD cop as I did a Navy cop..

    Anyway, I have rambled enough..

Long story short, using the Navy Police and DOD Police as a stepping-stone, I am now 7 years, three transfers and a promotion into a career with the US Marshals Service.. I'm an 1811 series Deputy Marshal, assigned to full-time enforcement on the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, and am living my own personal dream..

I have no regrets about working for DOD/DON, and am happy I did it. I have friends still there, and they seem to be relatively happy, but I wonder if they know what they are missing? Their rank structure is GS5 Patrolman, GS7 Sergeant, and GS9 Lieutenant, straight pay, no LEAP, no AUO...regular govt. retirement..30 yrs for 30% etc...

If they knew what I was making as a GS12 with LEAP, the exciting fugitive work I am doing, and the superior retirement, I bet they would wish they had jumped ship with me..

Bottom line, DOD/DON/DOA seems like a good stepping stone for those who want to move onto other FED LE jobs, or a good pseudo-LE job for fairly young retirees, looking for a second career with the govt.
