    Usfs 1811

Has anybody here applied to the Forest Service special agent position? If so, has anybody heard back yet?

I applied in May, heard back in late June that I am eligible and that my name has been forwarded to a "selecting official." I'm wondering if any interviewing has started or if anybody else has progressed past this point. Does anybody know what usually comes next in the process?

    Thanks in advance!

    usfs hiring

I applied on-line for the USFS 1811 openings on 4/23/08. Are there any USFS 1811's on-line that could give me a heads up, what the agency is looking for ect...?

not an 1811 but an LEO.
In California and most of the other regions, the forest service is a grow your own org.
Several of the agents who have recently been hired are from the uniformed ranks, including Patrol Captains or other land management agencies (NPS, BLM , USFWS.)

After getting your usual AVUE message that generally means you were on the most qualified / best qualified list. At that point HR takes a look at certain quals that you have listed and the develop the cert. The cert then goes to the selection committee or the hiring authority. They make their selection with or without interviews. An example is a person who select a minimum pay grade of 11 instead of the lowest like 9 might not even get looked at if they decide to hire of the 9 cert.

Good examples of what the forest service might be looking for are:
They hire a lot of Vet's and Status candidates.
A bachelor's with a decent amount of experience or masters with some experience.
General outdoor skills, map , compass, topo, gps.
Working alone or in a team.
    Knowledge of 36 CFR's
    Wildland fire background
    Natural resource law
    Forestry

    PM for more .

You think FBI, DEA, ATF, Secret Service, etc. are competitive, try and get one of the Forest Ranger or federal Game Warden 1811 slots.

We have a couple down here and everytime I see them I ask them "How did you ever land that sweet job?" :D

Thanks for the input. I am an 1811 with a big agency and have been for going on 9 years. I have been a cop for approx. 6 years on top of that. I am really getting burned out of this so called arm-chair law enforcement. In the past, when I was stationed in the South West, I happened to work with the taking down of some grow fields. It was really fun and the S/A's in USFS I met seemed to love their job, which is a rarity these days. Don't get me wrong, as a so-called trained investigator, I have researched USFS and it still seems like a pretty good gig. With just being on this web-site for a small amount of time, I have seen how lucky I am to already be an 1811, with applicants, "very well" qualified applicants at that, spending months on end in the race to the job. I know that USFS 1811's only go to GS-12, but in retrospect, the old adage " do something that makes you happy" should be pursued.
