    ATTN: Those in College

This is a message for anyone who is currently in college or just out of school, who's looking for a job in federal law enforcement. I'm creating a Facebook group for those of us who are Federal LE hopefulls, hopefully it will be a good venue for us to talk about specific topics dealing with college and the whole job search/ advice/ comments/ experiences, without clogging up the Real Police Forums. If anyone is interested please send me a PM via this Forum with your name and school, and I'll get you invited to the facebook group. Thanks Guys.

A college forum is good, particularly with regard to the question of exactly when, before your graduation, you can start applying to the 1811 agencies. The general rule is about 9 months out. Given how it can take 2 years sometimes, I don't see why you can't apply as a sophomore!

If you apply as a sophomore, you won't have a degree which is going to be a big problem getting into an 1811 job.

    LoL... generational gap, I guess.

Facebook.com is like MySpace.com (sort of), but used by younger generations primarily (especially those in high school and college). A group on Facebook is simply a forum by which members of Facebook join for a common cause, or to publicize an event a group of friends are putting together.

That and all of the new applications that kept coming out. That's why I quit. I used to have a pretty good group for my Explorer Post on there but every time I logged in I had all those application requests and junk like that.

For OPSEC it would probably be a good idea to set the memberlist/boards to only be viewable by group members, "here's a list with names, photos hometowns and bios of a bunch of people with high level clearances who may work undercover in the future too" doesn't seem like the best thing to be floating around the internet.

On the topic of facebook... Watch what you put up on that site. The agency I work for now has seen what some guys put up there. The only thing worse than getting pulled into a supervisor's office, is getting pulled in for something as stupid as some pictures posted on there,

And they do look at that when they do your BI

I didnt realize this thread was still alive. The facebook group isn't huge, there's maybe 20+ of us who just have random questions about the hiring process or how we work out, nothing speical.

It's a closed group, people have to be approved by me to get into the group, and anyone is free to leave at any time. Personal information is secret, even to the members of the group. It's really not that exciting though, and the information is limited.

The worst thing I have on facebook is a picture of me drinking a beer in my regualr bar. My life isn't exciting enough to get me in-trouble via facebook.

For those who have not tried it, separately Google your own name, your nickname, and your screename(s). Enclose your name or nickname in quotes if there are spaces between, e.g., "John A. Doe", or "Johnny Doe".

You may be very surprised at what is on the internet, and how long it is on there for (with archiving, its essentially forever).

I have heard uncorroborated stories of people "flaming" others on websites and forums only to have their messages come back to haunt them later in life.

P.S. I use the term "Google" in the generic sense; if your favorite search engine is Yahoo!, Ask, MSN Search, or something else, use your favorite.

I actually googled my screen name yesterday. Funny you mention it. The only thing it brough up were my posts on real police and honorfirst. And some contributions I have made to a few science databases, that's about it.

I don't see the issue. They're just random links to a law enforcement web site and a web site about protein structure. It's not as if I've done anything wrong, or it's linking me to Al-qaeda or something. The only way to not be found on the internet is to never use it, and even then it probably still wouldn't matter.

I already work for state government, so all of my notes/files/e-mails are on public record for years and years to come. I'm not worried about it.

Statements like that indicate to me that you "assume" everyone knows what you know, and is aware of what you are aware of relating to the Internet.

However, this is not all about you ..... this discussion should be for those who are NOT aware they are leaving a permanent record or "trail" on the Internet; those who would otherwise post a "strongly worded opinion" (I'm trying to be polite) criticizing some politician, Agency, Government policy, or worse on some blogsite or forum which can later be dredged up during a job application, background investigation, security clearance, or confirmation.

Processes such as those above are not subject to your standard reviews, and there is no opportunity for rebuttal. As a result, there candidates out there who have been disqualified never knowing it was because of some personal opinion or emotional statement made years ago on the internet (or elsewhere) while they were high school or college.
