As an employee of the BOP, you get a pretty nice retirement package and standard Federal benefits, but I am pretty sure that is it.

The only non-military Federal employees that have access to military Bases that is similar to Military personnel are DOD employees assigned to that post. They have some general access to other bases as well. (I belive this is accurate, but there may also be others)

You get to handle lots of federal prisoners.

If you want to get the benefits of military personnel... VOLUNTEER FOR THE MILITARY. There are exceptions and some of us feds get CAC cards that give certain benefits, but it is because of our neccessity in supporting certain military missions.

While on TDY to a military facility, I was fortunate enough to be afforded the benefit of shopping in the PX, and to avail myself of certain other amenities. This isn't a routine occurrance, however, and I doubt I could drop into Fort Wadsworth or West Point and start throwing my weight around.

I'm told that there is some way in which federal civilian pay grades correspond to military rank. However, I'm also told that this is strictly an administrative measure, and confers no actual command authority. What effect this would have on children receiving schooling on a military base, I have no idea (though I'd imagine it would have none whatsoever).

In short, I wouldn't advise making any fed civvie employment decisions based on the privileges afforded servicemembers; they're two vastly different worlds.

I've never had any problem getting on any military base with my federal 1811 credentials, and I've been let into a few O-clubs with them, when I was meeting military officers at them for one reason or another, but it doesn't get you much else. The only place I have been where my credentials alone let me buy things at the PX has been Guantanamo Naval Station. But, I'm not sure there eve are any non-military stores at Gitmo, since I don't ever remember seeing one. :D

If working at BOP is anything like where I work, you will quickly find that federal service places a whole lot more limitations, than privileges, on your behavior, and there are a lot less things you can do now, than you could before.

Your father's friend has access for ANOTHER reason. Believe you me, being a BOPer does not afford you a whole lot of "privileges". Let's just say that they are not the highest ranking agency on the fed food chain.

...and you really should settle in a bit before copping an attitude. You may find the site much more enjoyable (and receptive).

As smcc360 stated the Federal civilian pay grades correspond to military rank for administrative purposes only:

    GS-11 = 2nd Lt.
    GS-12 = 1st Lt.
    GS-13 = Captain
    GS-14 = Major
    GS-15 = Lt. Colonel

I have only seen this used in room assignments in the BOQ (Bachelor Officers Quarters): higher grades = larger rooms while lower grades = smaller rooms and occasionally no air conditioning. For example, when you have overnight training on a military facility. As Group9 stated, your Creds can also get you into the "O" (Officers) Club also. These are the only "privileges" I am aware of.

Most BOQ's will also allow you to "rent" a room on a space available basis even when you are travelling on personal business. I have never done this, but know Agent's who have gotten very, very nice accomodations in San Diego, CA and Newport, RI very inexpensively. FYI .....

You can find the actual table in here: http://www.usapa.army.mil/pdffiles/r210%5F50.pdf

Section 3.2 or thereabouts. It's a bit different than what was posted above.

    Hi Everyone,

I have been coordinating multi-day training sessions at various military installations for a number of years, and have relied on the information provided by the Base Housing Personnel which I posted here.

However, thanks very much to Vorpal for his/her link. Based on the information in it I stand very much corrected, and now feel my personnel may have been getting "screwed" in terms of quality of accomodations. Imagine putting up with and trying to explain to approximately a dozen people why their rooms were not air-conditioned when everyone elses were ..... As you all may well know, when you try to explain that its based on "seniority", the newer personnel do not want to hear any of that because to them seniority is a dirty word!

For those who do not want to wade through the 248 page US Army document, the following grade/rank equivalents are presented in it:

    GS-1 thru GS-3 = E-1 thru E-3 = Private thru Private First Class
    GS-4 = E-4 = Corporal or Specialist
    GS-5 = E-5 thru E-6 = Sergeant thru Staff Sergeant
    GS-6 = E-7 thru E-9 = Sergeant First Class thru Sergeant Major
    GS-7 = O-1 = 2nd Lieutenant
    GS-8 thru GS-9 = O-2 and CW2 = 1st Lieutenant/Chief Warrant Officer 2
    GS-10 thru GS-11 = O-3 and CW3 = Captain/Chief Warrant Officer 3
    GS-12 = O-4 and CW4 = Major/Chief Warrant Officer 4
    GS-13 thru GS-14 = O-5 and CW5 = Lieutenant Colonel/Chief Warrant Officer 5
    GS-15 = O-6 = Colonel

My apologies for passing on mis-information, and thanks again to Vorpal for correcting it. I consider this an object lesson about just listening to Base Housing Personnel instead of doing the research myself years ago. Please keep in mind that these equivalents are still just for administrative purposes only. (Gee, I could have been getting a two or three room suite at the BOQ!!!)
