You'll be contacted by the investigator for an interview. The timeline for completion is dependant on so many different variables that its hard to say how long it will take. Mine took approximately three months but I've heard of others being much longer and some that were much, much shorter. It just depends. Good Luck!

Congratz on the call, too bad there was a work conflict for the date. I am glad they will be contacting you again for the next rounds of BEXs.

    Good luck!!

    Back from BEX

I did not make it, I got 3/4 of the way through. The BEX is tough and congratz on you all that passed! The BEX and the staff were very professional and friendly.

Even though I didn't make it, I am going to try again! Now I know what to expect.

Future BEX'rs: You got to have your sh*t wired tight, because the bar is extremely high and they plan on a hiring a very small number of agents.

    Good Luck!

    :D

    Obtuse,

Sorry to hear that. Im sure they told you that many agents took the BEX several times before they finally passed. And now that there is no more LEH list, the cut off score was even tougher. I would definately reapply and give it another shot. As for me this would be my 3rd try. 1st time (several years back) I made it 3/4ths and last year I did the whole thing but was told I barely missed the cut off. Honestly though Im not sure Im going to take the 3rd shot now, much has changed in my personal life since the last time I took the BEX and after really thinking about it, Im not sure its a career I want to pursue anymore (Its VERY tough on family life from what I have heard) but can be a great gig for those who really want it. Good luck to all of you guys!

They said that they got rid of the LEH list, and this year the cut off score is the highest it has ever been. Because of that, he said there are many excellent candidates that get cut. You are right Mav, they said many dss agents took the BEX more than once.

Things have changed in life was well, since November 06, I am going to be a new dad, I have a son on the way (December) so I have more to consider when I plan on reapplying for DSS.

Keep me in the loop and good luck.

I ask because I am very interested in both LE and the world. I would love to travel and live abroad. I am joining Border Patrol but I feel that ultimately down the line I would like to get involved with DSS. I also studied International Relations in school and wanted to know if that would be a benefit.

    Thanks for any input.
According to BEX, they "define international experience broadly," meaning they do not require you to have traveled extensively or speak other languages. This helps, don't get me wrong. But it's not a foreign service political officer position you're applying for here. Your first stint will be domestic, and then overseas, with any requisite language and culture training coming from several months to several years at the Foreign Service Institute.
