    Situational Judgement Training

I have an oral board scheduled next week for an ageny that uses "Video Based Training" It basically consists of me strapped to a microphone and being filmed while I watch a scenario. I am then given some time to respond to it as if I were there. I hate these things because you get no return interaction so its difficult to guage how far to escalate/ de-escalate. I am brushing up on my scenario training to include: consenual encounters, domestic dispute, or a hostile work situation with a co-worker. I am pretty confident they're basically looking for how I approach and interact with the scenario since there is no requirement for prior police training.

Any suggestions on how to prepare? I'm not looking for someone to tell me whats on the test but rather something to review that I can apply to the judgement training. The academy was sooooooooo long ago!

Sorry Bro, no can help... Sounds like the "BPAD" test to me. I took one a long time ago for Torrance PD. They told me I failed. Funny thing is, my answers/responses/reactions today would still be the same...

Yeh thats been my expierence with these types of things. Every department has their own idea of what a response should be and in reality the academy will prepare you for their way of responding. Who knows what they're looking for, a resonable response for some may not be reasonable for another...

I did one of those and passed it not too long ago. They are just looking to see if you can excercise good judgement. Just try to relax, and think before you act because you dont get a second chance. A friend of mine took the same one and passed, and she had no LE experience.

I have no idea how to pre-prepare for such an evaluation, Jvale. There are way too many variables involved, plus you will be thrown into a totally subjective evaluation dependent on the interpretation of those "judging" you.

I would assume they would have to have some type of “reasonableness” guideline parameters and one just can’t study too easily for that. Either you got it, or you don’t.

It is not like an objective written test based on possessed knowledge.

    In any event, good luck!

Another thing they look for on situational judgment exercises is a firmness and commitment to whatever solution you choose. Many times, in personal interview type situational judgment exercises anyway, the interviewer will repeatedly offer, "but then this happens..." and "then this happens." There are few greater sins in the situational judgment exercises than going back on your solution, sputtering, and looking uncertain in front of the people to whom you're supposed to be the authority figure. Just my two cents.
