Anybody here been a FLETC intern? I'd like to ask some questions. I got accepted last week for the Winter session (starting in January) and have questions perhaps a former intern (or those who have worked with them) can answer.
Thanks,

Just ask your question. That's what the forums are for. It saves the step of asking to ask a question.![]()

Alright - i guess I should have just asked the questions.... I'm not too familiar with online forums.
Questions:
What is the reputation of the FLETC internship program in the FLE community?
I've heard differing statistics on how many interns from FLETC actually end up as FLEOs. One quoted 98% (which I find too good to be true). Anybody have knowledge of this area?
I was advised that when I'm there, it will be important to "network" with ageny representatives - as this is one of the most powerful ways to "market" oneself for post-internship employment. Is this really the case? Or does the bureaucracy of the application system still prevail....meaning you will still have some HR specialist mulling over your paperwork in the abyss of human resource bureaucracy.
I'd like to hear about Intern experiences - the best parts; the worst parts (in regards to FLETC internship).
Any suggestions on how to make the experience the most rewarding/beneficial to future employment.
Anything else contributors may want to suggest that is not otherwise specified in my post.
Thanks,
V/R

so much for asking questions on this thread....
Maybe nobody knows the answer. Did you look at FLETC's web site? I myself was not aware that there was an intern program through FLETC directly. (the only internship I could imagine there is assisting in the offices) My understanding was that one of the 70+ agencies hired you and sent you to FLETC (that's how it worked for me anyway). FLETC is DHS, I really can't see how doing an internship with DHS through FLETC would give you a leg up with one of the other agencies. For example, I was hired by my field station through my agency, then sent to FLETC. It wasn't, apply to FLETC, then an agency hires you.
Again, no one on this forum may know the answer to this question, so don't get bent out of shape because no one answered.
I have heard that a large percentage of FLETC interns end up as 1811s within a short amount of time of finishing school. You will basically be going through CITP (but will spend time auditing classes). I am not a FLETC intern, but have talked with a few. Its highly regarded in FLE, congrats. Learn as much as you can, but don't bank on it being your ticket into 1811, but it is a great step in the right direction. Afterall, when you do get hired as an 1811, you will know what to expect at FLETC (after having gone through it as an intern)
You ever heard of Occam's Razor? It says, "all things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually correct."
So, what is the simplest explanation to why you've gotten few responses? Is it that no one here likes you? Or are we all conspiring against you to keep the secret knowledge from you?
Or rather, is it simplier to believe that you're asking very specific questions about an internship program that very few people get accepted into, and perhaps, no one here has - or knows anyone directly who has - the answers to your questions?
Please, loose the attitude. You came here for help, which many here are glad to provide, but just because you don't get an answer doesn't mean we're keeping it from you. It probably means you're asking something we don't know.

InternBoy, Thanks for the info.. I don't bank anything until it's in hand. Thanks for heads up.
ROS.... That's wasn't appropriate.

Well, since I live and breath of what you think is appropriate, I'll be sure to keep my mouth shut and mind my manners from now on. :rolleyes:Originally Posted by Mukluk

Alright ROS, let's go over this again... See the " " emoticon after my statement? well, what do you think that means... if you look at the definition for those emoticons, you would have been able to figure out, being the future 1811 you are, that it means "confusion" or "confused". That is what put the proper tone to the statement. It meant nothing else.
If I would have use the " " which means "roll eyes", then that means being SARCASTIC.
Do I need to break this down for you?

InternBoy,
There are six interns this coming session. I'v heard that interns "shadow" (audit) the CITP (as you said), but I think it depends on if there is a CITP class actually going on. Timing must be an issue.
I've been to FLETC before, taking a 2-week advanced course...didn't see any Interns when I was there... Heck, I didn't even know they had an intern program until someone there told me about it.
Anyways, the info I have so far is that each intern is assigned to a division. I'm being assigned to the CTD (counterterrorism) division - so I'l be emphasizing a lot on force protection/physical security on work projects.
In looking around for which agencies do a lot with that, I have found that DSS is big on force protection/physical security...and so is the FPS within ICE. I'm trying to see what other agencies focus on that area.
At the same time, I'm concerned about family - my wife is an active duty soldier. She wants me to get in with a DoD-component agency such as the Dept. of the Army Police, or as a civilian CID, or as a force protection/physical security specialist. I've heard there is the DCIS (DoD IG Criminal Investigative Service) but I believe they are out of my reach - I have no investigative experience. I suspect they will only consider veteran investigators for those billets.
Being in a DoD related agency would mean it would be easier for me to get stationed near or with my wife....they have programs in DoD for that (to help retention).
So much info to gather....
Mukluk,
Just randomly came upon your post looking some more information on the FLETC intern program. I was also just accepted into their college intern program starting Jan 7th. (I know this doesn't anwer any questions about the program), but just thought I'd let you know
