    Question Federal Internship

I came here because it looks as though a majority of the people here have a vast array of experience in the field of LE. However, i would like to narrow the field down to Federal LE.

I am currently a student at University of California, Irvine, and was able to land a student internship with the A.T.F. this summer. Prior to comming to Irvine, i was a Explorer Captain with a major law enforcement agency in Los Angeles area, so i am extremely familiar with how local LE works. For those who have experience with the A.T.F., what do interns usually do. Yeah, during the interview process they described to me the details, but i usually like to hear it from others too. What should i expect?

Also, my ATF internship can only be for the summer (some kind of policy the ATF imposes). Next year i would like to obtain another internship from another agency (it kills me not to stay active in the LE community) . Can someone explain to me what kinds of things i would be doing if i went for an internship with the Secret Service? Does the DEA have an internship?

    Thanks guys!

Looking forward to hearing your valuable answers,

    Kevin

I am doing an internship with the DEA Washington D.C. Field Office this upcoming summer. I applied in September and they had something on their website that had information about internship programs, but I just tried to find it and I couldn't. They updated their website.

Well, since I was an intern with USSS in the Fall of '04, I'm pretty sure I can handle that. Mostly you do clerical work (answering phones, making copies, typing letters for the SAIC/ASAIC, etc.). I also got involved in special projects, like making an identification badge for outside partners of the office's Computer Crimes Working Group. If you bust your tail and show a good work ethic, you'll have the possibility of going on protective visits. I was scheduled to meet President Bush and then-National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, but both got cancelled at the last minute (POTUS was only a quick trip for hurricane relief and Ms. Rice's visit was cancelled altogether). Some of the previous interns in the field office I worked in had met several protectees, and had even gotten their picture taken in front of Marine One.

I usually tell people interested in an internship with USSS to call the local field office and inquire about it. Also, inquire about the Stay-In-School-Clerk position. The SISC position is a PAID internship. It takes longer to get because I believe they actually grant a Top Secret security clearance for the position (or so I've been told), but with that clearance you get to do a few extra things that regular interns don't get to do (don't ask me what these "extra things" are, because I don't know).

At any rate, call the local USSS field office or resident agency if you're interested in the position(s).

    AWARR,

Congrats on getting the intern with ATF. I've heard that as far as internships go ATF is the best.

Personally, if I had it to do all over again, I would try to gain an internship position at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). I've heard good things about the experiences of those who have done this internship.
