Thanks for all the information. It sounds like morale is pretty good at most locations. I just got back from TDY in D.C. and got to speak with a couple officers which was pretty cool. I guess a lot of the morale and/or likes/dislikes of the agency differs person to person and location to location, but it does sound like a lot of the goods out weigh the bads.
I appreciate the offer to answer questions and if I come up with any I will ask away. Thanks.
As an Inspector (0080) with FPS, how much of the job actually focuses on performing risk assessments or developing physical security requirements for federal agencies? For instance, XYZ agency moves into a federal building and thus FPS is brought on board to provide physical security specifications. FPS evaluates the design/layout of the space and determines the best practices to protect this agency’s employees and property. Is this something that happens often and does an FPS inspector perform these types of duties on a regular basis?
Also, how much of a typical FPS officer or inspectors’ normal duties consist of performing investigations? What determines if cases will be handled by inspectors or special agents? What types of investigations would a FPS officer or inspector perform?
Can someone point me in the direction to learn more about FPS’ arrest authority and power? Also, do 0080 and 0083’s with FPS have off-duty carry authority?
And finally, is 6(c) really coming down the pipeline? I’ve seen talk about this for the past few years and have never seen anything too promising to consider it would actually happen. Is there something out on the table now that makes this more convincing that it will take place sometime this year? Like was said earlier, this job is probably just as good non-covered as it would be covered.
Thanks for any feedback.
I don't know any people who work for FPS but was wondering if they are the ones who provide security at FLETC in GA and Artiesa? Just wondering because we used to call them FLETC 5.0. Other than that I've never met one.
I believe the FLETC five-o is not FPS but, yes, the "FLETC police."
They belong to the schoolhouse.....they do not belong to FPS......Originally Posted by tunlrat
I was also interested in aFPS postion in the past but I never got a call back and from my understanding they are not well payed. I was told that they jorneymen out at a GS-8 but I am not sure and as of right now they are not 6C covered but I have also read that FLEO is trying to get it for them and I think they should have it. They have every thing a regular police department has so I think it should be 6c covered. I have never seen them at our building but since we are secret and allways undercover I do not think FPS has a clearance to come by the office(just joking). I like the FPS and they are OK with me. I like to pass them at a high rate of speed(20 over) when I see them and I flip them off.(just kidding)
If they do become 6c it will be a great moral booster for the agency.

Yes. All FPS officers are authorized and have take home vehicles, however I have heard of some directors in a certain North East Region that doesn't allow his officers to take their vehicles home. So Barring working for this specific director, everywhere else in the country, we have take home vehicles.Originally Posted by MP_Steve

The FAM service also has take home cars. Now granted they do not have lights and sirens, not govt. owned and they are purchased by every individual FAM. My take home car is a jeep and I love to go code 3 to and from the airport. I just open the window, flash my issued surefire flashlight and yell LOUD trying to sound like a siren.
Journeyman level for an officer is GS-8, however you can promote up to a GS-12.Originally Posted by intheaircop2

Hahaha. I am in the application process right now, have my MED exam next week. When I read that at first I got excited thinking FAMs get take home cars from the gov. Would be sweet, but not a big deal.Originally Posted by intheaircop2
No issued cars but we do get a issued rolerbag with deployable lights and siren. When I am in the line for security and am late for a flight, I just push a button and a blue light flips out and the siren is loud. I yell out "AIR MARSHAL ! GET OUT OF MY WAY !" The bag is real cool. It also has a oil slick if I am being pursued by a bad guy or my ATSAC/supervisor.

It is funny you say. I am from one of the pacific islands and my dad was that kid in that movie. Now he does toilet paper ads on a local TV station here.
"Data" yeah? Which pacific island?
