Are FAM's going to get their 1811 Titles?

I was reading an Homeland Security Open Source article and it had different articles about about the FAM program, the new director, the FAM moral issue and its possiable exodus.

Anyway, FAM's are listed as 082 Federal Officers, and there was a pushed to have them as 1811 Criminal Investigators, but it got denied.

Is there still a pushed to make this happen? I have heard the FAM's have been having a harder time doing lateral transfers into agenices like the ATF, DEA, etc..Because they don't have the 1811 label?

Is this true, any FAM's out there can relate to this??

I am in the hiring process for the FAM now, and I don't want to go the all the hard work to complete it if I am stuck in the position with limited career advancement.

    Need answers:confused:

082's are non-investigative DUSMs, not FAMs. I believe FAMs are 1801's.

Don't hold your breath on this. Time will tell, but it likely won't happen any time soon.

It's likely not due to the fact that they don't have the "1811 label" as it is that their duties do not involve investigations. The job of a FAM is force protection. The 1811 job series is for criminal investigators.

Best advice I can give you is to take the FAM position if the FAM position interests you, but don't take it with the expectation that it will lead to you eventually getting an 1811 position, as it may not.

I agree with Ros, don't try for the job if it does not interest you.

I have met several FAMS who have lateraled over to other agencies. Almost all of them had a career with the Border Patrol before going to FAMS.

If your goal is to become an 1811, stick with a career you will enjoy and apply to 1811 positions as they open. It may take years before you get on, so you need to stick with a career you will like in the mean time.

    Good luck.

Thanx for the correction Ros and also...

Thanks for the correction on those title codes

I have a great full time Army job that deals with vulnerability assesments. It is great!

I get awesome schools and training to go to.

This is not bragging, my point is this. I am intersted in some kind of Federal Law Enforement and I understand one has to get a shoe in the door. My plan is to eventually go ATF or DEA, something along those lines.

So, in to interm I am pursuing FAM's, but I don't want this choice to cut me off at the knees and severly limit my ability to move up and onward to future agencies.

    See my point?

And with the cut-off for fed leo at 37, and I am 29; I really don't have alot of time to wait for other openings and the competition is keen.

    career choice confusion:confused:

Well the good news is that both 1811's and 1801's are 6c for retirement. If you take the jb with the FAMs you will not have to worry about the 37 yr old cut-off.

Big Sexy can see his days as the resident Fam are numbered. You fellas handled that question excellently, all the while while dispensing good advice. It feels lonely being replaced so rapidly. This must be what downsizing feels like.:(

    Obtuse,

While the FAM position may be right for you (or anyone else), it is NOT the only non-1811 position that is 6c-covered. You can perform a search of this forum to find more positions that are covered under the 6c retirement system, but many uniformed FLE positions, as well as other positions in the federal system, have the same retirement system as the 1811 positions. If FAMs is a good choice for you and your lifestyle, go for it, but don't walk away with the impression that it is the ONLY 6c-covered position (1811 or otherwise) you can obtain in the years before you turn 37. You've got nearly a decade to get under the 6c system, so go for a position that is right for you. If it's FAMS, more power to you. If not, do more research into what is available and who is hiring.

If you have the education and training I would go straight for DEA, ATF, or whatever and skip the FAM's. I know several who changed from USBP to FAM's and 85% or better regret the switch. As hard as that is to believe:eek: . I'm sure one of the FAM's here can tell you what their day and training is like.

    Thanx all

Thank you for all the advise, I am going forward and will try to complete the rest of the hiring process from FAM's. The time frame is about a year and I do have other propects in the works, ei The Pentagon Police.

I am going to play this out and see what happens.

FYI: I just cerified and sent forward my SF86 via AVUE, so I guess I have some time to ponder this.

    Again thanx all:D
