ATF is in turmoil right now because of the recent switch to DOJ from DOT. Their budget is not longterm at this point (being updated weekly) so it may have a damning affect on hiring.
It's not in turmoil, actually the switch hasn't really affected the hiring process. The process took me approx. 18 months from application to receiving the "call".Originally Posted by FSUGrad
Have you received the results from your interview? Most likely it will be another few weeks. Have you already done the medical screening? If not then it should be that and the polygraph, then you are done.
How do you feel the interview went and what field division was it conducted in?
Good Luck.

From what I hear, the ATF is not really a private gun owner friendly organization. I have even heard them called the "American Gestapo". That's a bit exteme, but I would still keep my distance.
Mr.H-
Welcome to the forum.
The BATF is responsible for regulating alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. The violations they process are, therefore, going to be in those areas. Sometimes they will be at odds with gun owners/dealers. If private gun ownership was banned, they would lose a good chunk of their workload. It seems to me that it is in their own self interest to keep guns legal. Saying that they are “not a private gun owner friendly organization” is like saying that the traffic unit of your local police department wants to ban motor vehicles.
Also, there are likely BATF agents (or their friends) who are members here. Mentioning that you “heard them called the American Gestapo” is not going to endear you to them.

DC and Norm, thanks for the kind words about us and our agency.I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
We get alot of negative press and there is alot misunderstanding about what we do. Joe Hunter, private gun owner, good.....Tyrone Crack Dealer, felon, with a 45, bad. (And u goin down dog.)
I have heard alot of colorful names for us, hence my username. But American Gestapo, that is a first. I agree with Norm, Mr. H stay away from those militia forums. If you have ATF questions just ask an agent and it will be answered as best it can.

Just like all other contact with LE, as long as you aren't doing anything wrong, then you don't have to worry about contact with ATF or any other agency for that matter.
Other than that Welcome to RP!!!

Such comments are driven purely by ignorance. The biggest gun nuts in LE taht I have come across have been ATF agents. Not once have I heard of an agent that wants to target law-abiding citizens.Originally Posted by Mr.H

I've just gotta get my kick in before I call this guy an idiot. I promise i won't call him an idiot.
One of my Sgt's had a brother recently get hired as an ATF agent. Starting pay in the mid to upper 50's but stationed in San Fran. Do you think he will be able to afford a home on that salary? I'm glad I don't live in the west. ;)
All of the ATF agents I know want to chase drug dealing, car jacking, murdering thugs. None of them want to bother regular law abiding people. The militia nuts hate them, among others, but who cares?Originally Posted by Mr.H
And, most of them are gun nuts. I asked an ATF friend if he wanted to go to a gun show to fondle guns with me one time and he said he really would like to. But they were told not to go to gun shows on their off time for fun by their management because if any of the nuts there ever figured out who they were, there would probably be a riot.
ATF is a great law enforcement organization, and if I couldn't work where I am now, ATF is where I would want to go. The people they are arresting are people who seriously need arresting.

I've always had good experiences working with ATF people. Real professionals and most don't take themselves nearly as seriously as a lot of feds....
