BTW, It's not "Special", it's "Speckled" Agent, just like the trout.

And, sad to say, it's not just the laws, but the way some of them were enforced by the undertrained agents of the "old" ATF. The "new" ATF is far better trained and more professional. That is a good thing! The laws they enforce - some of them are bad things.

Just a few questions...whats a JBT? Would the ATF job use my military service years towards retirement? would I be able to sign off my own form 1's and process it with my fd-258 fingerprint cards? How about form 4's?

I'm assuming your speaking of an 1811 position (Special Agent). No. ATF, and other 1811 jobs are 6c covered for retirement. You have to be brought into a 6c covered position (with ATF or any other agency) before the age of 37, but the military is not a 6c covered position. My grandfather receives two retirement checks, one from the Army and one from USSS (which would be the case for you if you joined a 6c covered position).

Saying that I have to be in the 6c job before 37 means that I wouldnt be eligible for hire as a 1811 if I stayed in the military until 38 for retirement, right?

Correct. And if you apply at 37 (or even younger in some cases) you can still be turned down for the position as you have to be 37 at the time of hire. Since the hiring process can take many months (or even years), if you're too close to the 37 mark you can be turned down as well. Many will advise you to attain a 6c position as soon as possible, even if it is not an 1811 position (I believe CBP Border Patrol, USSS Uniform Division and several others are 6c, non-investigative positions that can "stop the clock" for those not yet 37).

JBT= Jack-Booted Thug A term of endearment given to ATF agents by the extremist-type 2nd Amendment groups and the militia. All we do is indiscriminately kick in doors and take everyones guns, no rhyme or reason. Or so they say. ;) Not quite an accurate portrayal of our day to day operations.

I had been a lifelong (not life) NRA member until I got some literature from them describing ATF as JBT's. That was it for me and I cancled my membership.

President Bush Sr. did something to that effect with his life membership a few years back.
