    6c covered positions???

Its getting difficult to tell who is 6c covered and who isnt. The VA is under the basic FRS plan. Meaning I get 1% of the high 3- average salary times the total number years/ months under FRS. In addition to that is Social Security, if its still around, and an annuity from the Thrift Savings Plan.

The special retirement provision for law enforcement officers and firefighters found in Section 8336(c) of Title 5 U.S.C. uses 50% of your high 3 average salary plus 2% of your high 3 average salary multiplied by years and whole months of service exceeding 20, plus unused sick leave.

So what FED agencies have the 6(c) coverage? Anybody got a list? Are all 1811's 6(c)? What 083's are covered? And if you are 6(c) do you still get the opportunity for TSP??

    Respectfully,

I can only answer one of your questions. I'm an LE Ranger with NPS, I'm 6c covered, and I have a TSP. I don't know much more than that.

Let's see: Special Agent positions for FBI, USSS, DEA, ATF, ICE, DS (I believe this qualifies for both their 1811 domestic and 2501 foreign service SA positions), USMS (both 1811 and 082 positions), IRS-CID, USPIS, DCIS, NCIS, AFOSI, and many, many other agencies, to include many of the 10-million different OIGs. Uniformed LE positions that are 6c-covered include USCP, USSS-UD, USPP, NPS-LE Ranger, and USBP. In addition, while not "Special Agents", FAMS are also covered.

I seriously doubt one exists, as I've never seen one (and have spend a good deal of time looking for such a list).

I don't believe so. While all of the one's you can think of are, there are some obscure 1811 positions (ex: with very small OIGs) that are not 6c covered. I'm not sure if the 1811 position with Federal Portective Service and Pentagon Force Protection Agency are 6c-covered either. Special Agent positions that are active-duty or reserve military positions with Army CID, AFOSI and CGIS would not be 6c-covered, as they would fall under the military retirement system.

There is no complete list, because 6c coverage is based on the duties of a particular position, NOT the job series (although that can be a fair indicator). Been covered before, but off the top of Bigs' head:

0006 Correctional Administration (includes wardens, agents, support staff)--ALL COVERED POSITIONS
    0007 Correctional Officer--ALL COVERED POSITIONS
0025 Park Rangers--law enforcement positions are covered
0080 Security Specialists--the very few 'covered' positions in this series are those involved primarily in protective service details (i.e., executive protection)
0081 Fire Fighting--most are covered (a few Federal "fire inspector" positions have only 'secondary' coverage, meaning employees can be hired under the regular retirement system if over age 37)
    0082 Deputy US Marshal--all covered
0083 Police Officers--some (USSS-UD, US Park Police, Capitol Police, among others) are covered, many are not at present
    0084 Nuclear Materials Courier--all covered
1801 Misc. Investigative Positions--some are covered, most are not
1802 Enforcement Support Positions--some covered, some not
1811 Criminal Investigator--most are covered, a few are not
1812 Natural Resources--less common series than in the past, agent positions are covered, most 1812 game warden positions (usually within DoD) are not
1816 Immigration Inspector--only Senior Inspectors assigned fulltime to Prosecutions are covered
    1896 Border Patrol Agent--all covered

TSP Thrift Savings Plan- is the retirement program of date. The difference between having the 6c coverage or not comes into play with the overtime. I have held both covered and non-covered positions. When I was not covered only my regular pay went into my retirement. Now that I hold a covered position, all pay is calculated into my TSP.

You may read about the different retirement programs, but those really changed a quite a bit in the late 80s- early 90s.

Mind you this is just from my experience. I can't speak for other agencies or individuals.

Sexy, I was just on the US Capitol Police web page and it says they are under the basic FRS. The US Park police web page doesnt even mention the retirement plan. Did they recently change? It seems the best 083's the Govt has to offer INMHO are the Capitol & Parks more patrol opportunities.

Interesting how the nuclear materials guys are covered- when we asked why we weren't covered, we were told are primary duties weren't investigations????

As stated below, some are covered, while many aren't. Mind you, Big's info is a year or so old.

I just learned something new, I thought all 1811 positions were covered under 6c.

Sweet ! I just took the USPP written and the USCP is scheduled in January. Hopefully I'll end up with one of them otherwise I'll have to apply with PFPA (yuck). What was the USCP like? Any opportunity for patrol? They seem like they got a great Chief and lots of toys.

Thanks for the info everyone !
