Former legacy US Customs 1801 here. Nope, no 6c for us and I believe the new CBP "Officer" position still does not have it either. I was enrolled in TSP though. I believe the TSP was open to most Fed employees. But then again I'm wrong about a lot of things...

Like I said I haven't worked there in 4 years so I don't know what it is like now. But I stood at a door for 8 hours straight wearing my hat and watching a metal detector. And if I dared to take my hat off for more than a second a supervisor would be sure to write me up for it.

I did not lateral to Park Police. I had to go through Park's whole course. The lateral program they did was a one time only thing and happened after I switched.

I recently read a study on the OPM website concerning the 6c retirement. Basically they said the system is messed up. It pointed out that you could be a cook or a recreation aid at a federal prison and receive the 6c retirement, but if your a police officer for the VA your out of luck. I don't remember what their recommedations were.

There seems to be a little bit of confusion about how FERS and 6c interact. By and large, all fed. employees are covered under FERS, regardless of whether you're a "6c" LEO, a CBP Officer or a secretary for FEMA. Where the change comes in is how you earn your retirment percentages (1.7% per year for the first 20 years for covered LEO's and 1% per year for everyone else). Clear as mud, I know.
