Anyone on the board familar with federal probation? I have a friend of mine you recently got an interview, and was curious as to what type of background you need to get hired (probation officer, LEO, etc). Also, what goes on in day-to-day business?

I used to be a county PO, and I know a couple of guys that made the jump to federal. From what I understand, it all depends on where you work. Some offices want a master's degree in CJ or social work, or even a JD. Here in Harrisburg PA, they want you to have a masters + some kind of relevant work experience (probation, law, police, etc.)
The work you do also varies by office. Here, I think it's mostly paperwork (Pre sentence investigations, recommendations for court) . When you have violators, the USMS goes to make the arrests, not you. Again it varies from office to office....
If there are any fedpos on this board, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but this info is from working and talking to some of the federal guys in my area.
I thought the Feds did away with the probation system.

If I remember correctly, the parole portion (as ex-uspp has stated) is gone but the probation part is still there.
I also believe every district (94 if I am re-calling correctly) kinda does their own thing. Some have weapons....some don't. Some go out in the field with the DUSMs to make arrests.....some don't. It's all up to the Chief Probation Officer for each district....
When I interned with the USMS back in 97, the DUSMs that I hung out with worked closely with US P&P. I know that Switch has said that his district doesn't work with the ones there much.....
Here is a job description from USA Jobs about a Probation job in Northern CA.
As stated earlier, each district hires their onw folks and there is no central place to apply. You just have to watch for openings if your interested......

This one is a 1811 series. I have seen other series for the job....once again, just depends on the District.
What pay level are they at?
Once again, each District sets it's pay.....and it's not a GS pay because it's ran through the Courts.Originally Posted by JonSch7

And that is the only one posted on there.....
