Other Fed PDs (NSA, CIA, FBI, FEMA)

I've read quite a bit about VA Police, Pentagon PD, and FPS. What about NSA, CIA, FBI, and FEMA? Are they similiar? I've noticed that NSA Police is hiring. Does anyone have any words of enlightenment about these other agencies? Also, is the FEMA Police actually a separate PD for FEMA, or is it DHS in general?

Thanks in advance to anyone that has info.

    FEMA Police
    FBI Police
    CIA Police
    NSA Police

I've worked in Fairfax County PD and was in an area where there were a lot of CIA police. I can tell you about them and extrapolate that NSA and FBI PD are probably very similar.

Those CIA guys had some nice training and fantastic equipment (MP-5's and M4's, night vision etc) in their cars. The problem is: site security. They had ZERO jurisdiction or authority off their property. If they did do a traffic stop or write parking tickets they were embroiled in campus politics because everyone there is more important than their co-worker. Those guys spent the majority of their time as gate guards. The dudes patrolling were going from office building to office building and checking them. On the road they were regular citizens in traffic.

The guys I met were nice guys but they never lasted long. They were all using it as a stepping stone to something else. A lot of them disappeared after the first major hiring of FAM's after 9-11.

We have a Pentagon PD Sgt. on this board and from his stories they are a lot busier with actual police work than those CIA cops I knew. Pentagon PD is like working as a cop in a small city (that's what the Pentagon is during the day.)

I'm most curious about FEMA's Police, and their alignment and function. I'm guessing it's more of a security role, not unlike many of the other similiar agencies. By the way, I could care less if the job is more security related than LE. I know some folks like just LE better, and others need the proverbial "fix." Hey, if I could make a decent compensation package, and live to retirement in a "security" environment that's fine by me. But who's fooling who, the sh*t can hit the fan with anyone, in any agency, at any time.

What would you like to know about the FBI Police ?
The older you get, the better you get, unless of course you are a bananna.

Like many of the police agencies I've listed, not alot is known about them. Well, I haven't read or heard much about them. It's easy to just say, "They are alot like this agency, or that agency," or "they pretty much just have a security mission." But, every agency (especially at the fed level) is unique in scope and purpose. I have worked in LE and security, and enjoy (intellectually and profitably) security related fields the most. So, from a personal point-of-view, I find alot of the proprietary police and security functions of federal agencies particularly interesting. Some carry out a full range of LE and security duties, with all kinds of authority and jurisdiction coverage. Others provide more of a resource protection function with very specific authority and limited jurisdiction. Although these issues have been brought up before in this forum, I would still like know about NSA, FEMA, FBI, and CIA (which has been covered...thanks) a bit. Mission? Weapons and Training? How's pay and advancement? Authority and support? I notice some agencies are paramilitary in appearance, while others are uniformed in traditional "peace officer" attire (So, that's a gee-whiz too.).

One sideline question. A lot of the jobs exist in very high-cost housing areas. How do you survive on the salary? Let's say you work in the DC area. Where would you live (single or with family)?

All I've ever seen FBI police do is guard the Hoover building in DC. Gate guards sitting around all day. I suspect they may also do the same thing at the field office. If you want to run an x-ray machine and wave wands around visitors all day it would be a great gig. At least the CIA police drive around to different sites and monitor a great deal of property (Langley is huuuuge.)

Actually, the FBI Uniformed Division has a patrol responsibility for a 10 sqaure block area around both HQ and Washington Field Office, they share concurrent jurisdiction with MPD. The division in New York City are deputized US Marshals on top of their FBI powers, the unit in West Virginia has the same autority as the West Virginia State Police on top of their police powers. FBI Police have full authority to enforce all Title 18 law as well as local infractions. Yes, there is some static post work but the TDY details such as the Super Bowl, All-Star Game, Olympics, Hurricane Katrina and just about any other large scale event make up for it. Officers are also assigned to various specialty units such as evidence response team, hazardous materials response team, police emergency and police emergecy response team (Uniformed version of SWAT) to name a few. All officers qualify 4 times a year with their duty weapon, MP-5, M-4 and Remignton 870, so yes we have toys as well. Feel free to PM me with any further questions that you might have
