Other than the announcement hyperbole what is the unit and what do they do?

They track illegals and drug shipments the really, really old fashioned way. Here's a link to an article I found online:

Actually, I think it is because most of your work is on the reservation.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

I can see that, does that still make you a better officer? I hear people complaining about minority preference hiring and reverse discrimination but no one has made a peep with this requirement.

There was a program about them on Discovery Channel a few years ago. Very similar to Border Patrol, very old school way of LE. Kinda cool...

I am HONORED to have been an honorary Shadow Pack member during my time in Sells. I did some tracking with them, and they are just amazing. Give them enough tracks, and they can tell you how much dope each person is carrying....heck, after a while, they could tell you their names! They could even teach this gringo 'city boy' the rudiments of tracking! Two of my most prized momentos are my Shadow Pack and Shadow Wolf Patches!

The Native American requirment is part of the deal made with the Tohono O'Odham tribe, whose land we were on. It has to do with tribal rights.

And while it was mostly hot, dirty, work, being in at the end, with the helo's swooping in, finally chasing down and arresting the smugglers and getting the dope, was worth it. They are a unique unit, and it was a pleasure to work with them.

(Customs Patrol Officer (and Shadow Wolf) Glen Miles was killed in the line of duty on the Reservation. If you know where to look, there is a monument to him in the back country.)
