I think the entire problem with Police Officers in the VA is some of the officers themselves.
Make no mistake about it. The administration of the VA doesn't want to have a police force. For most scenarios they don't need a police force. They were perfectly happy when we were security gaurds.
The absolute only reason we even exist is to provide a safe enviroment for vets to go and seek medical and psychiatric care and for medical and mental health professionals to provide that care.
The VA liked us as gaurds, but society has changed and become more violent. They transitioned to being a 'police force' to provide us with some additional tools to help us do our jobs, but don't think for one minute that they wanted that transition to signal that they wanted us to become more aggressive, or change in any real way.
For those VA cops that want to be 'real cops' or more like 'street cops' you might as well leave now. You will never be happy and the VA will never let you become what you want. If you can get on board with the program, you can advance, enjoy your job, and be a positive influence to vets, staff and other officers. If you can't wait until you get to arrest your next person, get in a foot pursuit, or 'take someone down' ...... it doesn't happen often enough in the VA setting to satisfy you - so start looking now.
As for me - I like the job - I like that it is laid back, and I really like talking with the vets - so I'll stay.

Benjamin Franklin, 1755
"Living in our society is like living in a very tall building. The rich live on the top floors. The poor live on the lowest floors. And only the cops travel to all the floors. Only the cops see it all."
Det. Ted O'Conner - Chicago P.D
