Application started by contacting my local field office and expressing an interest in working as an intern for them. All the paperwork was given to me by the Adminstrative Officer at the office, which included the SF-86 (Questionnaire for National Security Positions... god that thing was long), several other background-related forms, and papers that served as a contract between the office and my university (making sure that it would be accepted by my program for course credit).

Next I was brought in for an interview with the SAIC, which was really fairly informal. He explained the duties of the position, as well as the realities (clerical type work, no gun or participation in high-risk situations, etc.). He further stated that if I worked hard at the initial remedial chores, he would help to make sure I was able to attend the fun stuff (i.e. attending protectee visits).

After the interview and paperwork submission, the office conducted a background investigation. I don't know if the intern BI is comparable to a federal BI for a Secret or Top Secret Clearance, but it basicially involved agents interviewing representatives from my university and program department, present and past employers, neighbors, friends, relatives, local PDs for the cities I've lived in. I don't know specifically how far back they went, but one of the agents did scare the **** out of one of the guys living at my old fraternity house (he was afraid the agent had showed up for someone doing something really stupid :D ). I don't recall exactly how long the BI took, but I do remember it starting near the beginning of my summer vacation and ending around the start of the new school year.

Hope this answers your questions. If you have any more, shoot them my way.

I did one back in 97 with the USMS. Great experience.....and also helped me decide that at times there job was cool, the court time would suck and I didn't go forward with my application.

My internship had the same affect with me. I thought USSS was where I wanted to work because of all the interesting stories my grandfather had told me about the job, but when you talk to guys (and gals) who work the job and find out what protection work really entails... well... it definately takes the glamourization out of the job. I still hold the utmost respect for the agency, but my internship helped me realize I needed to focus my attention to other agencies with a more investigative nature.

So was it just college credit or were you paid on the GS level as well?

Unpaid, as most federal internship are. USSS does have an internship-like position that is paid as well, called a Stay-in-School-Clerk (SISC). SISC also receive a security clearance, and are allowed to do some assignments that interns are not. I don't know the particulars of the SISC position, but one of my classmates in grad school was one at the time I was an intern. Seemed like a pretty sweet gig for students. The USSS's official website often says they are not hiring for the positions, but you'll find that if you call the local field office, the hiring is actually done locally, and thus, positions are often available that are not listed on the agency's website.

It seems that the Co-Op's or most summer internships are usually the paid ones and very competitive positions (i.e. FBI Honors Internship, IRS CI CO-Op etc..)
