The federal Officer, Agent, Inspectors are all different in what they want to be called. Most of the of the agents at the FED level are pretty easy going. Then there are the FBI, man those guys make me wonder sometime. Lets just mark it down to my old days riding with the police and going to a bank robbery. Why be picky, your still a brother or sister for christ sakses. Oh well.

To be or not be a COP

Let me add my two cents worth:

As a Federal Law Enforcement Officer and Administrator of a Federal Training Academy for BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs and Tribal LAw Enforcement Officers), I would put one of our cadets against any state or local police officer and the Cadet would prevail. If the original post was true then all those years of working uniform police patrol, traffic, calls in progress and working unsolved cases were just my imagination. So the beatings ang fights were all in my head. NOT

It is true, most Federal Law Enforcement Agencies have specific missions, most are different that traditional law enforcement. Many have just investigative authority like the FBI. Our agency is one of the few Federal Agencies that have traditional law enforcement compenents, Uniform Police Operations, Criminal Investigations, Dispatch and Corrections. BIA Police provides law enforcement protection to over 35 indian Communities who want the US Government as their law enforcement department.

Please do not lump BIA in "all Federal Law Enforcement Agencies", since 1969, we are proud of the law enforcement work we provide and continue to provide to our Indian Communities.

Yea, I thought the "challange" was vauge and inappropriate. We're all cops. Can't we all just get along (did I just quote a four time felon?).

Cops in the Federal service, well it has to do with status. You see not all federal law enforcement are afforded LEO status. Is this a big deal? Yeah, toward our retirement only though. The FBI, DEA, NAS, NIS, CIA, INS, are all considered LEO status jobs, thus cops. Now the BOP (federal prison guards) are not armed but are given LEO status. The VA Police have guns, arrest authority both federal and state, and patrol, but are NOT given LEO status. Yet they are considered cops. I think it is up to the individual to decide.

    Dear FSU Grad,

I DO agree with you. "A cop is an attitude..."

Trying to obtain/utilise intelligence so that other cops are prepared / well warned ahead of time and perhaps even
    have other strategy already prepared

I think the term "cop" comes from the old English verb- to cop, meaning to grab, or take control of, and was used as "coppers" grabbed people, i.e. made arrests.

The name"cop" is used still in the UK, but I don't think it is as common as in the US. I for one have no problem with being called a cop. (better than some of the things I am called)
Bullet-Cybernautics, let the law handle this.

I suspect that FBI Agents can't enforce state and local laws. However, us municipals can't enforce federal laws/regs. So we each have our place/job.

Ever hear of an FBI AGent arresting someone for DUI ? I have not. Ever hear of a municipal police officer arresting someone for failing to pay federal income taxes ? ( Not on a warrant) Not me ever. I have had people complain to me that so and so isn't paying their federal taxes. I have told them to call the IRS. I have no jurisdiction.

just to confuse you all the New York equivalent to the Texas CCP in fact DOES include FBI Special Agents and a host of other federal LEO's as police and they have arrest authority concerning state felonies
