    BS Degree?

Hi folks, long time reader-newbie poster here. I wanted to say thanks for all the great info that I have found from the veteran posters on the board. Once I finish with school and get a couple of years of le experience under my belt, I would like to apply for an 1811 job. I'm 24, married, with one child, and this next year I'll have the chance to get back into school to get a bachelor's degree. My question is,what major would be most useful as an 1811? Thanks for the help!

Do a search. You will find that your major (unless in a highly sought after foreign language or science) has little bearing on your package. The most important thing is that you have the degree.

B.A. in Political Science here. I thought it gave me a great basis of knowledge on local, county, special, state, and federal government, public policy, constitutional law, and if your at a decent university, your advisor should be able to hook you up with some great internships at govt. agencies. Just a thought for ya.

I guess that I should be serious for a second and answer the post question. I am finishing my B.S. of Crim Justice online with Park University. Only 2 classes left, and I finally get my degree.

If you want to be an 1811, here are some BS degree majors to consider: Hard Science (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.), Accounting/Finance, Foreign Language, Engineering, or IT/Computer Science. These degrees are directly related to a number of the critical skills for the FBI's SA positions, but are also in demand with many other 1811 positions. If you can double major (or even minor in one and major in another), all the better.

ROS and Switchback are both right. Maybe you should just major in something you're interested in. Sounds like you're most likely interested in Crim. Justice possibly? My degree is in CJ and I became an 1811 a little over a year ago but I could've had a BA in P.E. and I would've gotten it. Computer forensics are always in demand. Sociology and Psych are ok. I think as far as an 1811 position goes (now I am only speaking for ICE because that's all I know) it does not matter--as long as you get your BA (BS).

As far as working for FBI, I know they hire a lot of scientists, accountants, computer people, etc...I guess it just depends on what you like and what you eventually plan on doing. School can never hurt though!!!

I think ROS's mention of foreign language is very important. I get the impression that SA applicants with a number of agencies, especially the FBI and agencies in the intelligence community, are put miles ahead with reliable foreign language proficiency -- particularly, of course, skill in less typical languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Russian, etc. I'm currently majoring in international affairs and studying Russian, but as foreign languages are quite difficult for me, I doubt I'll ever reach a desirable proficiency. I took a semester of intensive introductory Russian worth 8 credit hours and it decimated my GPA. Hope to pick it up again next fall...

But anyway, foreign language is always a great idea.

Learning a foreign language is hard enough already. Taking one with a full semester's load is even tougher. I know the feeling; college Japanese killed me. You want to keep your GPA up so when you apply for Fed jobs you can apply as an "Outstanding Scholar" or whatever it's called now. It's not much but it allowed me to come in as a GS-7 instead of a 5 for legacy USCS. That's more $$ in your pocket & a step up in terms of seniority (as long as they keep the GS system).

You may want to consider taking a language course on your own through a private tutor or private language institution. I'm thinking about it...
