    COAST GUARD 1811's?

    Is there such a thing?

I am a current federal employee, not an 1811 though.

IS there such a thing in the CG?

Also what is the rules towards CG officers carrying their weapons off-duty?

Is there restrictions to this between reserve duty and active duty?

I just hate it when general public refers to the CG as an entity of the DoD, aka MILITARY.

LOL anyway, please help me out.

    THANKS!

There absolutely are 1811's in the USCG (as well as in every other branch of the military- Army CID, Air Force OSI, & NCIS for Navy and Marine Corps). They are SA's with the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS). For more details, check out their official site: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-o/g-o-cgis/cgis.htm

    Thanks for the link.

Now I was wondering... lets say one signs up for RESERVE duty or even ACTIVE duty. Are they not assigned a sidearm? If they are, are they allowed CARRY on/off duty?

Is the weapon of issue, THEIR weapon?

Reason I ask, USCG is mainly L/E and under the USDHS umbrella... just need some clarification if I am comprehending it wrongfully.

    THANKS AGAIN!

If you are doing LE work in the USCG, I believe you are issued a sidearm (which is still the USCG's weapon, not your's). I'm applying for OCS with the USCG, so I don't know all the in's and out's yet, but I believe that's the case. Also, while LE is a large part of the mission of the USCG, it's not the whole equation. USCG also is involved (perhaps equally so) in search and rescue, port and maritime security, and other support functions.

I would figure Port/Maritime security IS an ACTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT function. Although I do know that CG does SAR detail as well.

So let me get this straight.

They issue you a firearm, but it is then SHARED by other USCG personell? Meaning when you suit up from 9am-5pm you put the gun to your side, when you leave you gotta lock it up at the station/base at 5pm?

Almost like the National Park Service SEASONAL Ranger program? Issued a weapon only at duty locations?

Active duty and reserve CG do not have off duty carry authority. Civilian 1811s do.

Click on this link for a brief(2minutes) video of their duties.

I think I am about to sign up for duty with my area(reserves) as I have permission to attend training without a conflict of interest.

TPD Cadet, you've been a member to RP for how long without know about the search function? :D

An 1811 is a series number for federal criminal investigator (often titled "Special Agent" or "Inspector"). Positions that are designated as 1811's include FBI Special Agents, Secret Service Special Agents, Investigative Deputy Marshals, Special Agents with CGIS, and many, many more.

CGIS (S/A's that work for the CG) are issued a weapon, credientials and a badge. They also derive their authority from a different USC which I don't happen to recall. S/A's attend FLETC in GA.

Regular members of the USCG derive their authority from 14 USC 89, are issued a firearm to be used while ON DUTY ONLY, are currently not issued credientials or a badge. CG members involved in law enforcement are either trained in the field or go to a 6 week academy which is located at the Border Patrol academy in Charleston, SC.

Hopefully that clears it up a little ;)

That's not entirely right. CGIS has agents that are active duty members of the USCG. Working for CGIS is a special assignment so to speak. In order for an active duty member to jump aboard, they have to be at least an E6 ... and needless to say it's pretty damn competitive. Active duty members who are CGIS agents have the same authority as a civilian agent. When first picked up as an agent (from being active duty), it's a 4 year gig, however if your SAIC gives you the thumbs up you are pretty much golden until you decide to retire and will never integrate back into the regular AD component of the CG.

    Hopefully this makes sense.
