Ok when I first starting posting I did not pay much attention to the labels in the righthand corner, which is my problem, but can you guys give me a break with the REP. comments.

In addition, there is no reason for me to continue arguing as I do not have more overall knowledge of the federal system. But, I personally felt that I knew plenty information about a few agencies due to the 2.5 yrs experience I have with a local and federal agency, as well as research, and education.

Like I stated to others I am not here to stir up crap or come in like I know everything, as it seems I portrayed, but I apologize for my previous comments and would like to put this to rest.

It's funny that the agents that I know in the DEA and FBI both seem to like the job I do. I think they find the fact I have little to no paperwork particularly appealing... not to mention that, with my team, I hit an average of 6-8 houses a day.

Wait did you say little to no paperwork........how can that be, you work for the gov't, don't you receive written approval to use the can? :D

    6-8 houses a day....that is rock'n 'n' roll'n.

    Keep up the good work.

Oh, so with the somewhat dry weather, have you been able to hit the trails yet? Not me gotta get a few parts for my bike. Hopefully, within the next few weeks I will be up and running.

Anyhow, is your agency in demand for Special Agents as well? Also, what specific experience or education is the ATF looking for?
From an experience/education standpoint, all the agencies are going to be pretty similar: a bachelor's degree and sometype of LE experience. For a major think Criminal Justice, Accounting, Psych, or any other field that is LE relevant. Also, a foreign language is a good idea for a second major or for a minor.

If you are not in shape, get in shape-run, bike, swin, and run some more. If you are shape stay with it. Start shooting now and learn to shoot, develop good techniques, and become proficient with different weapons systems.

Most importantly, from the get go, do your research about the agencies before you apply. Know what laws they enforcement, their histories, and what the agents really do. Check websites and call the agencies national recruiting offices.

Be educated and prepared.....know what you are getting into and whether it is really what you want to do.

From the ATF side, we have very limited Open Periods for vacancies. Over the past 2 years I think there have only been 2-3 open periods and only two scheduled TEA exams. Also over the past two years we have only 6 or 7 academy classes, which consist of 24 prospective agents in each class. So we have not hired many people, so yeah, it is very competetive. Keep checking the federal job websites and contacting the recruiters.

I was swamped with the Operation Falcon thing and then I rolled right into a SOG assignment with no time off. My bike is fresh out of the shop with a tune-up, just waiting to hit the trails... sadly, it is at home and I am not. :( In a few weeks, I hope.

    JBT,

Thanks for the great insight on ATF.

    Steve1568,

What was your first assignment location upon graduation and was it one of your top choices? How likely in general, do they fulfill your preference of location?
