USSS (or the Fed govt. in general) & LASIK

    Okay, here's my sitch:

I'm once again smack dab in the middle of the USSS 1811 process (I just re-did my initial & panel interviews as well as re-submitted the mountain of DHS forms just recently). I'm still pending approval from DC to even go ahead in the process--e.g. poly, med, BI, etc. (that may take a while anyway).

I had LASIK surgery 4 years ago. Later this month, I have to re-do one eye for a touch-up. It's nothing serious but they basically have to re-open the flap & fire the laser into my eye to correct "a minor problem." Even though it's considered minor, I can already see US Government doctors considering this as full surgery--because I guess it is even though it's only one eye.

I believe it's a one year (?) waiting period for someone with recent LASIK surgery to apply for a Fed LE job. I'm not sure about the time period as some agencies' policies may be 6 months--I don't know.

ANYWAY, whatever the time period is, will I have to start over & re-do everything or will my application status be metaphorically "frozen" until the mandatory wait time? As you can infer my concern, because that would royally suck if I had to do it all over; considering this is my 2nd time around ALREADY... :(

I don't have an answer for you, tunlrat, but wish you the best of luck, as you've been hanging in there for a long time.

This is from USAjobs and is the posting for Secret Service SA opening. The way I read this is that LASIK is only a 3 month wait.(FBI says a year..???) While I am here and you say you went through the ap process twice with them I have the following questions: How long from initial submission of full application is it until the interviews and other tests? I took the TEA exam years ago for the US Marshals...is that still good? Basically I am running out of time as I will turn 36 this summer so I was wondering if I had a prayer to meet the time deadline? Good luck tunlrat.
    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens; between the ages of 21 and less than 37 at the
time of appointment; and possess visual acuity no worse than 20/60 uncorrected,
correctable to 20/20 in each eye. Note: Lasik, ALK, RK and PRK are acceptable
corrective eye surgeries for special agent applicants. Applicants will be
considered eligible for the special agent position provided specific visual tests
are passed 3 months after Lasik surgery and one year after all other surgeries.
In addition, applicants must possess a 4-year degree from an accredited college
or university; or 3-years of work experience in the criminal investigative or law
enforcement fields that require knowledge and application of laws relating to
criminal violations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    10-7....for now

In a non-election year, it usually takes a couple months from the time you submit your initial app. forms to start the interviews (initial, panel, etc.). The processing speed also depends on which FO you apply out of--the bigger the office the faster the time. For the USSS (I'm not sure about other agencies that use the TEA), your score is good for only 2 years.

I wish you luck. I hope you make the cutoff age.

Since it's been 4 years since your LASIK, and you haven't had the touch up yet... get glasses until the process is over. Then do the touch up after you get hired.

Ack, but I hate wearing glasses (and/or contacts); that's why I got LASIK! Anyhoo, my procedure is in 4 days and I really don't want to put it off much longer. I guess I'll roll the dice (& with the punches) and see what happens.

    I'll keep you all updated...
