Has anyone heard of this federal position. They are 6c covered w/AUO (like 25% LEAP) from what I know and not too many of them nationwide. Sounds good. I saw a site they had up:

I was a Deportaion Officer before I came to the Marshals. It was a good job but a bit paperwork intensive for me. The job can vary (in terms of duties, street time etc) greatly from district to district. Basically, they follow cases of aliens who are either detained or released while going through the immigration system. It's kind of like being a Pretrial officer in the U.S. District Courts. DOs also serve warrants, perform deportations and handle other LE functions. I had the opportunity to go to Jamaica a few times, Bermuda and Trinidad. Like everything else it's what you make of it and if I found myself back there tomorrow I wouldn't complain. I talked to some DOs outside of the NY/NJ area and they can make a convincing case that it is one of the best unknown jobs in federal LE.
Exactly. I know a few that came from Customs or Immigration Inspector positions and went DO after 9-11. Since the "incident" they are doing more and more of the hunting illegals down type stuff. They serve a lot of warrants but they also have a lot of paperwork and office time. I try to stay FAR away from any Immigration related thing but this actually sounded like a decent job, plus it's covered.Originally Posted by Vorpal

I had a friend who was a deportation officer. He told me the officers were unarmed while on enroute to a foreign country with a deportee. Once they got of the plane in whatever country they were flying to they would take the hand cuffs off. I, personally, would not like to be unarmed when releasing a person I just deported. I don't know if it is still like this though.
I read a great article on Deportation Officers in the Federal Times (hard print) about how their job has gotten better because DHS is now making them rotate at times to be on fugitive squads involving illegal aliens. I could not find the article on the federaltimes.com website.
I worked with a Deportation Officer on a task force targeting Colombian Jewelry Thieves and I have to admit when we made an arrest, they were more scared of the DO then the other agencies involved.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.
