When did the wearing of suits come into effect in the FBI. And who said that FBI agents are to wear suits.
How come they dont wear uniforms as, lets say the regular police officers.

If its a good question, would you be kind enough to give me a Rep.

Because they are not police officers.
The job of a federal agent is very, VERY different than that of a patrolman. For the FBI in particular, most time will be spent conducting interviews and completing paperwork.
When they are in a position that they need to be recognized (such as an arrest or search warrant), they simply put on a raid jacket. On those days, however, they often bypass the suit. The agents that I routinely work with are on a gang narcotics task force and their "uniform" is the same as mine... jeans or Roral Robbins and whatever shirt you want to wear.![]()

I remember seeing the old FBI photos when they wore the sharp pin suits with the matching fedora.
But like Switchback stated, many federal agents wear suits or clothes that blend in with the general population depending on what assignment you work.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

As a federal agent, I rarely wear a suit. I wear a suit for Court, meeting with certain individuals as appropriate and that's about it.
Generally I wear jeans and whatever shirt that is appropriate for the weather and conceals my duty gear. If I need to be recogined I have a raid jacket for low risk stuff and a tactical vest which is marked.

Same here. Suits are for court, meetings, and certain other events. Normally, it is jeans, khakis, BDUs and the like depending on what the day holds. And don't think what you see on TV and the movies holds much weight. In most federal LE offices I have been in (other than the FBI), the bosses wear suits, the JPAs (Just Plain Agents) are dressed in normal attire. Let me say this I hate suits, they are the worst thing about court.

J.Edgar Hoover mandated that all agents wear a dark suit. He felt it shown the professionalism that the public needed to see in the begining. At first it was only to be black. Suits were the norn long before they became eligable to carry firearms. After Mr.(Ms)Hoover passed on the great clothes closet in the sky, the rules were relaxed.

The "J" in J. Edgar Hoover? I understand it stood for "Joan"!
I actually prefer wearing suits over the class A uniform. Whenever I used to go to court, I'd opt for the suit & tie; even in 90 degree weather. They're just more comfortable (except the necktie part). Plus, I just look plain cool! :D
Yes, and ummm...Intimidation. The suit thing was for respect and also to intimidate people as a "no nonsense" investigator. I saw a special on Discovery or History channel or something. It was really good...then again they had one on Customs Inspectors and it made us look like a great job tooOriginally Posted by richcecil

And while we're on the subject of federal LEOs in suits, just click on the "Just for my RP friends." link in chewy's signature to see his own version of him wearing a suit ( :D ).Originally Posted by chewy
