How should law enforcement pay be reformed?

What do you think of the administration’s effort to reform pay for the federal law enforcement community?
    • Do current pay systems work?

    • Should there be greater harmonization of pay systems across agencies as they affect law enforcement?

    • Can pay-for-performance work for law enforcement organizations? Why or why not?

No names will be published without prior approval. E-mail your comments to Staff Writer Eileen Sullivan with the subject line “Law enforcement pay,” or mail to: Editor, Federal Times, 6883 Commercial Drive, Springfield, VA 22159.

It really doesn't matter much as to the merits of it. If federal pay is changed in any big fashion, it is probably going to be for one thing only, to save the G some money.

Don't do pay for performance. It is too political. It is very easy for higher ups to demand you get graded down to avoid pay increases or for political reasons. Since we implemented it several officers have had to successfully grieve their evaluations. It is hell on morale. Our city avoids COLAs by folding it all into the whole process. So in actuality you aren't fighting for a raise you are fighting for a percentage of the actual COLA for the area. It just sucks all the way around.

I'm an 1811 and VERY opposed to band banding. That is the un-politically correct way of saying "pay for performance." But even if you are a top performer under the new system, you can still get little, if any raise. It is all about playing favorites. Every single person I have spoken with that falls under pay banding has nothing but negative things to say about it. I know over at DHS they are constantly receiving nice color 'propoganda' brochures (how much did those cost taxpayers?????) saying that pay banding is the hottest thing since sliced bread, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Yes there are slugs in the government who are only there for the paycheck. Every business has them. But the vast majority of us take our positions seriously and WANT TO KEEP THE GS SYSTEM.

I am also praying that we keep the current system. I just hope I hit a GS 13 before the pay banding comes into effect.
