    USSS Special Officer

Does anyone know anything about this position? Right now there are openings for Special Officers for the Carter Detail in Georgia and the Reagan Detail in LA. It is in the 1802 series which I understand is mostly support, but the vacancy announcement asks to provide firearms proficiency so perhaps it is more than just a support role.

Would this be a good place to start in Federal Service?

Does this qualify as LEO experience?

Does this provide good experience for USSS SA or other 1811 positions?

I havent been able to find any info on this position on the USSS website or anywhere else. You can check out the announcement on usajobs.com. You can find it under 1802 series. From what I gather, it sounds like work typical to the USSS UD, but you get to travel, and dont have to live in D.C. Maybe I am way off.

Any info about this position would be helpful.

It's my understanding that Special Officers do a lot of different things. My grandfather was a Special Officer for 20+ years. He did a lot of work related to SAs (protection details, but not investigative work), but he came into the agency in 1968, so Special Officers don't do the same things they did back then. His main job was supervising the transportation security for the POTUS, VPOTUS and other foreign dignitaries. During his time, he served on a protection detail for Henry Kissinger and a few others, but I'm quite sure that protection details are strictly SAs today. He even had a badge that was identical to the one the SAs had (on his creds it said "Special Officer" instead of "Special Agent"). As I said before, Special Officers do different things, so it's not necessarily true that you would be doing all or any of the things my grandfather did. From what I hear, the agency is trying to wane out the Special Officer position, as so many of the job descriptions they have now are more specialized for specific fields (i.e. Special Officers aren't really needed as much). If you have what they're looking for for the position, I say go for it. I'd look into it myself, but I'm more interested in the jobs that have investigative work involved.

You would be assisting with the permanant detail at those locations. As you know, they get protection for life...24 hours a day. You woudl be assisting those agents there.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

For getting that position, I think having the right qualifications is the hardest part. Not too many uniformed LEOs can say they've done diginitary protection, been on a driving detail, and the like. The only non-1811 LEOs who do that, that come to mind, are USSS UD & Capitol Police, & maybe Pentagon & FPS. And those lucky enough to be doing that in those agencies usually stay w/ their respective agencies.

If you're on one of those above mentioned agencies, I guess it would be a nice way out of DC I suppose.

State agencies do dignatary protection for their respective Governors, and are trained by USSS, so it's possible to move to Fed LE from State LE. (If that's your cup of tea.)

Vaild point. It takes several+ years to "move" into those cushy positions at the local level though. I guess I was just too impatient...

Special Officers serve as protection agents at (usually) fixed locations - I had a friend on the Ford Detail. Non-uniform, fixed post and local area protection, assisting the S/A's of the detail. Limited travel, usually just for the biggest events. Since it is an 1800 series, it should count as LEO time.

I believe these positions are purely ununiformed armed gaurd positions with either no or very limited law enforcement authority.

    Possible arm guard not 1802

I have worked closely with SSA & DSSA plus I know a few active & retired DSSA & I can tell you that when it comes to SS Uniformed Div. they do all standing posts & non-detailed orientated work. The Secret Service only provides dignitary protection to heads of state & their families. They also do VIP’s who are in a temporary roll as heads of state. The US Dept of State take cared of all foreign dignitary & their families who fall below heads of states rank. The Uniformed Branch of the Diplomatic Security Service do minor rolls like escorting VIP’s like the Dally Llama & various foreign diplomats who aren’t that high in the scheme of life but might have religious importance.

Before you even get close to doing any dignitary protection you’re status with SS have to be already been proven; at a minimum 6 to 10 years as an agent. You will require at a minimum a TS & have been cleared to have Oval Office Clearance. The 1802’s series do investigation as well as management for SS, they are all college grads from a reputable university or college. The polygraph for SS sometimes takes up to 4 hours so that should tell you where they stand. Also when they do your clearance p/w SS goes back all the way to birth no just 10 years. It is definitely a challenge so if you make it; you should be proud of yourself.

    Good luck budy….. :p
