    Detention Enforcement Officer US Marshals

Can anyone please give me any pertinent information on this position? I assume this is a good way to go if I would want to be an agent.

Do a search. DEO positions are not always the best path to an 1811 slot. Check out 911jobforums.com for a significant amount of info on this and other topics regarding different positions with the Marshal's Service. Most people don't realize that there are two kinds of deputies (same badge, different powers), not to mention DEO's...

I would not say different "Powers." I would say different job responsibilities but both have the same law enforcement "Authority."

There are 0082 and 1811 series Deputy Marshals. I'm an 1811 S/A, but with another agency. My understanding is that although they (Deputy U.S. Marshals) have the same title, the 0082 series deputies by agency protocol/policy can't do all the same duties as 1811 deputies. In addition, I believe their creds are slightly different in wording. Again, I should have reworded it as administratively restrained in most instances from all the same duties as an 1811, although by law they are vested with the same powers. If there is an actual DUSM, please feel free to chime in........

Youa re essentially correct, coyote. The DUSM-082 position was designed to have the overlap with 1811s. It was so that smaller offices who get 082s would still have personnel able to function in a variety of roles that we DUSMs must fulfill.

That being said, in many districts, (particularly the larger ones) 082s spend their time in prisoner related duties such as court and transport. Often in those same districts, because of heavy court loads, 082s may be working side by side with 1811s. However, it is the 1811s that are the first ones to be pulled out to work the streets.

In other districts, 1811s all work investigations and are brought into court only when absolutely neccessary. DUSM-082s, in many cases, are out assisting 1811s on the street. They are not, however, permitted to be assigned cases... only assist.

In reality, most districts fall somewhere in the middle. Half of our 1811s are full-time on task force. The others spend about half their time working warrants. The 082s get out when the court scheule permits.

Is everyone totally confused now???? Most of the operational management is.

it isnt a good way to get into the service, you arent considered "one of the boys" you really are looked at as single "A" farm team member.

They should eliminate the DEO position and either RIF them or bump them up to 082. this would eliminate alot of friction and overlap of job duties.

The DEO position is NOT the 0082 position. It is a job in the cell block area handling inmates before and after court. Feeding, hugging, petting, passing out blankeys and nubbies...that sort of thing. From what I have heard there is NO LEO authority, no arrest powers. When I was an INS DEO we had guys wating in line to move over to our job from theirs...that was just sad.

the usms hurts itself by having employees that are stuck at a certain wage doing such a dangerous job such as transporting federal prisoners. Morale suffers because the public sees a deo as a deputy marshal and within the usms you are viewed as a second class citizen. Also many districts suffer because deo's are so limited in what they can do. the 082 positon and the deo position are so similar that it boggels the mind in the reason on having deo's in the first place.Money is wasted, instead of being put to good use filling the right type of position for a flexible agency such as the usms. Deo's have no place in such a flexible enviroment. Their title better fits the Bureau of Prisons than anything.

In an enviroment that requires teamwork and a high state of morale why have competing positions and staff fighting each other instead of the inmates?
Bitching about your Agency on a open website is not a good thing to do there stud.......

This is why boys in Iraq are dying for, Dont ever forget the rights we all have. If fear prevades us, As Americans than what are we?, If we have become timid or shy to express or concerns about or goverment then what is this all about?

Perhaps.....but common sense dictates that if your agency sees this and figures out who you are.....they are going to be pissed off at you for being an idiot on a open LEO forum.....
And yes, we have a few DUSMs on this place.......so you never know who's watching. And capturing your IP address and figuring out where it's coming from is a pretty simple process.....And I am sure they will be very pissed off if you are doing it from a DOJ or USMS computer system while you are supposed to be working.....

You ever here about the NYPD LEO that got fired because of his website...? Google for it.....because it just happened a couple of months ago.....

This is a private forum, so I imagine that you can figure out what that means to your argument.

Now, correct me if I am wrong... were you drafted into your DEO position? Ihave yet to hear of any DEO to say they were misinformed as to the duties of the position. That being said, stop yoru whining. If you are so squared away, go get a job elsewhere. Otherwise, suck it up.

...also, I don't think I need reminding about what WE are doing over here in Iraq.

Lord, I ask you to be with me
    In a very special way
    As I face the challenges
That come my way each day.

    Please give to me compassion
    For the innocent I see
Help me to protect and serve
    Those who depend on me.

    When duty calls to danger
    I will rely on you
To give me strength and courage
And help to make it through.

And when my shift is over
    Thankful I will be
That you have been the unseen guest
    Walking next to me.
