    DC Jurisdictions

I just went down to D.C. to visit some family, and to show my girlfriend what it is I hope to be doing when I get done w/ all my schooling. We did some siteseeing and then we drove and went downtown a few days just to show her UD USCP and PFPA. At any rate I developed a few questions and I'm sure DC and Cecil will help me out.
Who has jurisdiction over GW Parkway, I drove on this once as I was leaving from my grandmother's who lives in McLean. I didn't see a single cop (marked) in my travels. Is it on federal property, and is it solely the responsibility of your agency (USPP)... to DC of course!!

And I visited the very moving Holocaust museum for a few times in a few year. I had seen some people wearing this uniform by the Customs headquarters, but there were a lot of them in the Holocaust. These people looked like security guards, had cheap hats, some of them wore them to the sides. Their badges said "Special Police, and in between the two Security. The ones who had exposed duty belts were armed. I didn't know if they were police officers or security guards. Another thing that confused me was an individual who was in the exhibit. He was in civilian clothes had a very noticeable bulge. He was with his family, and as I came closer to him I noticed a green credential issued by the facility that read LE. I was under the impression that very few people could carry a weapon in DC even if you were a LEO. It was obviously legit, because he proceeded to go into a back room with a Police/security guard. I didn't think many could off-duty carry, esp in a federal building in DC.

And on a side note, I visited WWII memorial for the fourth time now since June, and it still leaves me breathless. This was the first time I had seen it at night however and it is a completely different thing. What a great job all the LE agencies do down there. I have a better eye for these things than many so I can see a substantial amount of LE activity, so I always felt safe. They don't seem obtrusive or intrusive in their vigilance to provide proper security and protection of the nation's capital. I think a great balance has occurred, so I tip my hat off to you DC and your fellow brothers in sisters in your agency in particular. Hope some day I can join you in a sister agency.

GW Pkwy is US Park Police...and McLean is Fairfax County Police. Could have just been a busy time when you drove by...cuz I know all those depts work hard. Metro PD was probably working a homicide...

In DC they have private security compaines and they have certifications they go though to be called "Speical Police".

I don't remember the exact number but there are a ton of different Law Enforcement Agencies out there, 40 or more and I can't count the number of "Special Police" out there.

Wow, I'm impressed. You've got a great eye for someone who isn't an LEO yet. Attention to detail is something they'll bang into your head in any academy; you're already a step ahead than many! Those guys in the holocaust museum are probably private contractors like Ranger 101 said. Probably similar to Federal Reserve Bank "Special Police." In reality, no one really seems to know much about them. Next time I pass through DC, maybe I'll strike up a conversation with one of them. Yeah, I know what you mean about seeing so many fed coppers in that area. When I took a stroll from the Hill to the Lincoln Memorial last year, the District was crawling with uniforms. Being an out-of-towner, I couldn't tell the difference between Metro, USPP, USCP, USSS UD, etc. They all kinda looked alike to me. I even noticed a couple of Smithsonian cops out in front of their museum. I didn't even know they had a police force!

When I was in DC I took my gun with me everywhere; I never had a problem going in all of those museums. And I didn't need to carry a sign saying I was LE either. As for those "special police" I wasn't impressed. I saw one security gaurd walking along with her ball cap hung on her firearm. It was embarassing.

Ya, I've never had a problem carrying my gun anyplace, even in DC. The nice thing of being federal is that no one really messes with ya. Then again, it is concealed so they don't really ever know...hopefully.

Yeah, Chewy, it's best if no one knows but if you just go through the metal detectors in places like the Smithsonian and the Holocaust museum problems may arise. But unlike TSA, the gaurds at the museums actually have some common sense and didn't hassle me.

Ya, I've never had a problem, I just identify myself and good to go.

[QUOTE=Ranger__101]There are a few of us on the board who are Federal Reserve Police and can answer may of the questions. [QUOTE]

Are the Federal Reserve Officers allowed the carry off duty? Or is that of their own accord?

You guys sound like DOD or VA police. What kind of training do you guys undergo? Do you go to FLETC, LETC, in-house, or something else?

Since its FLETC 'approved' is their any room for transfers? I mean, to another FLETC trained organization without having to return to GA for the basic stuff again? Or is it only recognized throughout the Federal Reserve Bank Departments?
