I would love to become a FBI Agent? Where To Start?

I am 17, and already planning on going to college for Law Enforcement, and trying my best to become a cop around or in my home town. Now my one day dream job is to work for the FBI. So my questions are, how do I become at least resume material for the FBI. Are there FBI Training Camps around Minnesota, if not, where are they located? And what are the basic requirements from starting at the bottom of employement in the FBI?

    Any comments? Thank You

Experience helps... most jobs I have seen for the FBI wants to see at least 3 years work experience. If you want to be a special agent... try majoring in accounting, foreign language, get a law degree, etc... check the FBI webpage for special agent requirements... if you want to work your way up so to speak... look at the support positions... they do not have a specific requirement for specialized degrees... I hold a master's in criminal justice and am in the running for investigative specialist... Also..if you want to work for them...keep yourself squeaky clean..ie, no drugs, keep your credit pretty clean, etc... All that information can be found on the website under employment... most of all you need lots of patience when you apply... cause it is a long road... Hope that helps.

My piece of advice is this. Don't pigeon hole yourself in the FBI. You are only 17 and are obviously just beginning to learn about the wide world of LE. There are so many different opportunities out there in law enforcement, you would be doing yourself a huge disservice by not at least looking into what else is out there. IMO, some people make the mistake of thinking the FBI is the end all be all of law enforcement when it most certainly is not.

I agree, the most important thing is to look at all levels of LE: local, state, and federal. Look at your options. If you definitely want to go federal look at all the different agencies: FBI, DEA, Secret Service, ATF, Marshal's, etc. See what each agency investigates. Remember, it's not all like we see on TV, movies, or books. Do your research and make an informed decision. A good way to learn about an agency is to go through their internship program. Check the agency's website or call the local field office and talk to a recruiter, they will point you in the right direction.

I would add that you should be aware that the FBI's mission is shifting more and more away from law enforcement, and toward anti-terrorism investigations. If you are primarily interested in law enforecement, there may be some better choices out there for you.

Seventeen is a good age to start thinkng about these types of decisions. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to do and how to obtain it. Go to as many agency's web site's as you can find. Using the internet search function with terms like "federal law enforcement" will get you most of them.

I am not an LEO, but from what I've seen, your best route to getting into the FBI, CIA, or U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets)., besides experience, is to get a degree/become fluent in a middle eastern language like, Farsi, Pushtu, Urdu, ect. Of course, that demand could be met in the next 4 years, but I doubt it. I think we have a long road ahead of us with these guys (terrorists).

Clean record, no credit problems, accounting and foreign language skills all help. But I agree with Group9 (The 'Friendly Narc'), look at all the 60+ federal agencies. The FBI is just one of many quality agencies.

I've personally known two Air Force Security Police Officers that have applied into the FBI hiring process only to be turned down and not told why. FBI standards are very high. These two guys were fine officers in their mid to late 20s, college degrees, very physically fit, and as professional as they come. Denial hasn't wavered them though, and I'm sure they will attempt to get hired again.

As said before, don't lock yourself into the FBI. I guess it's great to have a big goal like that, but it's definitely not easy to get in. I'd suggest some military LE or local PD experience before applying.

Since your in high school, if you find yourself copying someone else's homework and taking credit for it then put your application in pronto...

All kidding aside, like the others have mentioned, do your homework on the other federal law enforcement agencies out there. Finish school, go to college, learn a foreign language and be computer literate and you will have have an advantage over the other applicants.

Good luck, goot to see you already focused at such a young age. When I was 17 I wanted to be a roadie for Metallica.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

Here's an interesting little piece of intell on the FBI:

    http://www.911jobforums.com/vB/showthread.php3?t=38008

The last post is from an individual with FBI, claiming that roughly 7% of those who apply for FBI Special Agent positions make it through the entire process. Kinda sobering when you put it in perspective.

You are dead right with respect to knowing languages especially Arabic languages, but you do not need to know these or have a degree to get into the Special Forces. Proving sufficient knowledge in certain languages may shorten SFQC. To get into SFAS is like any other military school. Recruiters are on military posts every few months and they are expanding their classes larger than ever before for SFAS. They are even offering a pre SFAS as of late to get people geared up for the real thing.

I have posted this before, but as of last March, languages and Computer Science are the top 2 most sought after special skills (for the FBI). This will undoubtedly change by the time you are eligible to apply -- to the original poster.
