There recently was a job fair at my base. One of the companies that was supposed to show up was Wackenhut. Does anyone out there have any opinions about this company? Or are they just like mall security guards?

Well, I'll refrain from any smartelic comments about the company name....but here is their home page. It would appear that security officers are just one service they provide as well as total company infrastructure protection, acquisitions, investigations and training. Strategic planning and team building may be in there somewhere, too. Looks interesting. You would probably be required to move.
They do some contract work for DOD and DOE. Those teams seem pretty squared away. I have seen them work at a SWAT meet in Tampa and was really impressed.

Thanks for the replies, the website did explain the company somewhat. Just wanted to know if anyone had any job experience or interaction with them.
Well, Wackenhut is the only contractor force to receive CALEA accreditation.

They work for our local Nuclear power plant. Observe: http://www.wackenhut.com/object.php?obj=850029
They also work the DOJ contracts in DC as well plus are doing some of the sub-contracting for Armed Guards at the front gates of DOD instillations. The guys in DC where my ex-girlfriend works make 23 bucks an hour with full benefits. Most of them are retirees. There are a couple of guys that I met that were in the Air Guard and worked there and did missions with the Air Guard for a couple of weeks at a wack. They said they had no probleming getting the time off......
I would say if you did do it, make sure you were in the high-end contracts that were armed and had to at least get a secret clearance. That would give you a leg up if you as you were looking for other stuff....or going to school.
That is what I was thinking. I have a B.A. in Liberal Arts, mostly concentrated in Criminal Justice. Plus, I am getting out of the Navy the end of Dec. I would like to use that degree the best I can, it did cost an arm and a leg :D
The two major sides of the company are vastly different: Security for companies (mostly retirees), and the DOE Nuclear Transport Security out of New Mexico (high speed, low drag, VERY professional). The DOE teams are top notch. The other extreme are a bit above average for what they do.
They do most of the DOE work around here......
A couple of less desirable cops have gone to work for them here.
They work security at our power plant too. One of my buddies just got hired with them. They go through some pretty intense training, and get tons of OT once they start. Their SRT team usually kicks *** in the county and state level competitions too. If you don't mind an armed guard job then it's a good place to work. He's just out of training, so he's pretty pumped about the job, but there is a lot of time where you are sitting in a guard tower, or in a Ready Room.
In god we trust, all others we run NCIC.
They're the guys carrying automatic weapons on picket lines in and around Savannah River Site in this area.
That does say something if they're CALEA certified, imo.

Wackenhut had a wide variety of contracts and guards. I have trained many of them. They run from minumum wage night watchman types to well paid, well trained teams.
