1811, Usms
1811, Usms
Just Curious, what is an 1811??
A Criminal Investigator for a federal law enforcement agency (often referred to as Special Agent, but sometimes also called Inspector or Federal Agent). Oh yeah, an 1811 can also be a Deputy U.S. Marshal, but the entry series for this position is an 082 (i.e. not a criminal investigator)... didn't mean to leave you guys out, Switchback.Originally Posted by JS213

My new hero!
gotcha thanks for the explination.
0083 here :(
Glad to see that there are quite a few on this board though.
One Big Ass Mistake America
CURRENTLY, new hires are brought on as 082s (non-investigative DUSMs) and the 1811s are hired from this pool. Hopefully, the agency will some day return to the hiring process through which I competed. The 1811 slot was opened up to anyone. It tends to pull in the MOT COMPETITIVE applicants. The most competitive 1811 applicants don't want to be 082s.Originally Posted by ROS

How does one even apply for a 0082 position? It seems that they've frozen all outside hiring.
It goes in phases. Currently, they are hiring those military personnel that have or will ETS within 6 months (I think). I really don't fllow the recruiting thing much at all.

I spoke with a Deputy Marshal recruiter a few weeks back who said this same thing, but what I'm unclear about is the duration of this process. Are the 082 positions meant to be a temporary thing, with 1811 hiring positions planned to come back to the agency eventually, or are the 082 positions here to stay? The Deputy Marshal I spoke with told me I should not apply with their agency at present since my master's degree should help me be competative for 1811 positions elsewhere. He said if I really was interested in USMS, I should look to transfer when a lateral opening occurs after I've already become an 1811. Is this sound advice, Switchback?Originally Posted by Switchback

Me too...but only for 23 more months!
Ok, first, there is no indication that the 082 jobs are a passing thing. I said only the way in which the Service recruits is rather dynamic.
Also, it is sound advice regarding taking a job as an 1811 v. 082. However, your masters is no assurance of an 1811 slot... anywhere. The key is is to work the angles and make yourself marketable. Why not take the 082 job, if offered AND put in for 1811 slots everywhere. Your employment in the fed system, in itself, benefits you... some jobs are open ONLY to current fed employees. Also, how old are you? If you are approaching 37, you may miss the boat. Certain fed jobs stop the clock... an 082 job is one of them (as well as 1811s). You can take an 1811 slot in a less-than-perfect agency until you get where you want to be.
