    FBI Intelligence Analyst

    Hi all,

I was just hired as an IA for the city I originally picked. Due to VERY unforeseen circumstances, I'm wondering what the FBI's policy is on transfers. I have not yet started (I start in one week...) and do not want to jeopardize my position by asking directly if I can move to a different city.

    Anyone know of their policy?

If not, any advice on when to ask them? (i.e. on my first day or a week ahead?)

Thanks in advance, this forum has been really helpful!

Never worked for the FBI, but I was a Fed employee so the following is at best speculation & generalization about the Fed govt. You've already been hired to work out of that city, so you may not be able to negotiate a transfer now without them telling you to "take it now or walk" UNLESS they have an open roster of cities they need to fill. This is how things were for legacy US Customs. I would politely ask them now (I'm guessing your field office) rhetorically "what would happen if..." If they say no, they might at least give you some options later on down the line. In legacy US Customs, one can swap ports but ONLY after you've gained some seniority AND you can find somebody to swap with. I don't think I've heard of anyone swapping cities while still in training and/ or probation. I believe active duty military personnel can do something similar as my Army friend swapped w/ somebody to get out of Korea. Hope this helps...

Thanks, that does help. I agree the best way is to ask a lot of hypothetical questions.

    Cheers!

my understanding is that you have to serve 2 years before requesting transfer. I am not in the FBI yet...still waiting on the call to go to training. Might be able to contact your contact person and inquire about going somewhere else.

One more thing about that swapping stuff; (in Customs) you had to swap with someone in the same job series as you (& maybe even the same GS level as you). In other words, if you were an 1801, you couldn't swap with an 1811 so to say. That may seem kinda obvious but I thought I just throw it out there FYI.
