HEY! Can you guys (CBP) carry any handgun while off duty? WE are not allowed to carry anything else than the one they issue us. It is a heavy hand gun and I really miss the Glocks.

Legally we can carry whatever we want. By CBP policy, if we carry our issue weapon with an authorized holster (they have a list of about five or six authorized brands/models) then CBP will provide legal protection if we are involved in a situation. I know that a lot of guys have their own off duty liability insurance and carry their own personal weapon. I usually carry my own H&K rather than my issue weapon and as of late with all of our guys getting into situations I've decided to carry my duty gun for a while until I can get my own liability insurance...just in case.Originally Posted by intheaircop2

Too bad, those 17s are NICE...
I worked with and for several 1811 S/A's who did not have degrees during my years with U.S. Customs Office of Investigations (now ICE). Almost all of them started with the Border Patrol, and later got picked up by Customs. I'm not sure how hard that would be today.
As to guns in airports, you can legally put a gun and ammuntion into checked luggage on International flights. So, in the Customs hall, folks get access to their bags, and anything can happen. When I was in Israel, teaching Israeli Customs, they showed me some of the bullet holes from the Japanses Red Army attack in the Customs hall.
Some Port Directors recognize the threat, others "don't want to offend people."

Today it would be VERY hard, seeing as how ICE is experiencing a hiring freeze (LOL... sorry for the smart-@$$ answer... all in fun :D )Originally Posted by Sleuth
On a serious note, applying for the more recognized FLE 1811 positions w/o a college degree would be quite tough, as you are competing against others, like myself, who not only have a bachelor's degree, but a master's as well. I'm working on building the experience, so that I'll have the one-two combo (experience AND education). My advice to the original poster is get the bachelor's degree education any way you can (full-time, part-time, online, etc.), because if you exceed the norm as far as experience (which you certainly will have to do w/o a degree), having the degree will only help you more (rather than making you just able to float in the applicant pool).

That was an experiance I'll never forget. :D On the good side, the security guys were real friendly and we ended up (a year later or so) having such a good relationship with them that we used to go to dinner with them when they came in (some of them, obviously it wasn't the same guys every time). I kind of miss the airport...kinda![]()
