Coast Guard time, all things considered, should be much better experience than any other military branch for later federal law enforcement applications.

One, remember that Coast Guard is now part of the Department Of Homeland Security, which is the biggest federal law enforcement agency.

Two, other agencies, like DEA, work with the Coast Guard a lot.

Three, in my experience, the Coast Guard is very highly regarded by everyone in federal law enforcement. Most consider the Coast Guard to be law enforcement, I know I do. I spent a month flying and living with a Coast Guard unit on OPBAT a couple of years ago, and I made a lot of friends there.

Believe it or not..... I went Cook (for the money) did 2.5 years on a major cutter lots of fisheries enforcment a few drug busts ($20 million) and lots of INS boarding crossing stuff.... Did time at a SAR station all that was LE wise was BWI and Speeding in no wake zones (beat cop) and the best time I had was on a Patrol Boat.... LE overload.... spent more time straped than in the rack.....

Over all the only thing I would change is that I would go BM or MK those are the LE rates (everyone does LE but BM GM MK have more oppertunities) I got out today and joined the reserves as a MK.... I start with USSS/UD monday

A little info... the USCG has the second largest jurdiction in Federal Law Enforcment and NO its the USSS thats #1 not the FBI (internal waters to 200 miles off shore.....) The CG employs less people than NYPD..... and our general authority 14USC89a gives us the authority to search seize arrest inspect inquire examine ANY vessel or person in us waters witrh out a warrent

also there is a Special US Deputy Marshal Program and All CG boarding officers have US Customs Service Juridication...

Wow, what a colorful career so far! Not too shabby for a cook (wasn't Steven Seagal a cook in Under Siege?). What District were you assigned to? Does it really matter what District you are in if you make it onto a Patrol Boat for LE stuff? Sounds like PBs & smaller stations are the place to be.
