Are federal agents, such as the FBI, DEA, Marshals, etc., allowed to carry off duty weapons. I would think that they would, but I am not sure. Also, are they allowed their sidearm of choice for off duty carry? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Most federal agents are allowed to carry their weapon 24/7 depending who they work for. As for which weapon, I don't know.Originally Posted by Tweeder

Some agencies, such as the DEA (Group, helpe me out here) have a list of weapons from which they can choose for off duty/back-up.
Us, the U.S. Marshals, are allowed to carry any weapon that is at least .380/.38 in caliber, has a firing pin safety block, has a capacity of at least 5 rounds and has a double-safe action first trigger pull. You may carry the weapon as a BUG/off-duty weapon ONLY after shooting the Off-Duty Firearms Qual.
Also, FWIW, teh USMS encourages all the Deputies to carry off-duty. You have to love that!

Thanks for the reply. I visited your homepage last night and it has some really motivating pictures!!!!!!!! I hope to become involved in that line of work.
We have a pretty long list of approved personal use weapons that we can carry on or off duty. We also have a couple of small ones, like the baby Glocks for one, that are authorized for off duty, back-up, or undercover use, but not as primary weapons for normal enforcement operations. It basically includes almost all Glocks and Sigs, most HK's and a few Smith & Wesssons in 9mm, .40 or .45.
As fat as I know, most federal agencies are similiar but with their own list of weapons like Switch pointed out regarding the USMS.
As far as off duty carry authority, that varies among agencies, but for my agency, we are authorized to carry on or off duty. In addition, in some situations my agency suggests (and in a couple of very narrow circumstances require), that agents carry weapons off duty.
FAMS only weapon they can carry is the one they were issued, SIG 229. No onther weapon is approved for off duty carry wich really stinks!
What happens when visiting museums such as the Smithsonian or Capitol Visitor Centre where you have to go trhough search? Are you allowed to carry?

It's customary for new members to post an introduction so we know a little about who we're talking to...
Also, if you have a question, feel free to start a new thread. Adding an off topic post to a thread that has lain dormant for about 6.5 years is not the way to get an answer.
As to your question, I am curious why you want to know. Are you an LEO? If so, it seems to me that you should either know the answer to this already, or have a resource other than an Internet forum (like asking your supervisor or other people you work with) to get an answer.
This is not the kind of question we typically answer on the open part of the forum. If you are a Law Enforcement Officer, then look into getting "verified" as such by the site. That will give you access to the restricted areas of the site where you'll be more likely to get an answer about security proceedures or other OPSEC related issues.
