    Best Federal Law Enforcement

I was wondering if anyone here would happen to know what kind of federal law enforcement agencies would be interested in someone with my experience. I was a Sgt. in the Marines for four years and worked in Security Forces and held a Secret Clearance. I will have my B.A. in Criminal Justice soon. I'm still in great shape and relatively young, 25 years old. Will I be competitive, or do I still need more experience? Any info would help.

I would say you would be competitive in a lot, if not most, federal agencies. I suggest applying to all of them that you think you would enjoy working for. A big part of getting hired federally, once you get past all of the tests and stuff, is timing. Most federal agencies tend to hire in batches, and then often will go months, or even years, without hiring.

Get on the agency web sites to find the qualifications. I have to admit that they change so much I don't even know the exact requirements to get on in my own agency. I would have to go look at the web site myself.

One last piece of advice. I have been hired as an agent in two different federal agencies. In my experience, persistence is often the determining factor in who gets hired, and who doesn't, among qualified applicants.

    Good luck.

Get your degree and you would be looking decent to about any federal investigator position. Of course how competitive you are will depend on additional factors, but that is a great start.

The USMS is great (though I may be a little biased). Keep in mind, however, that the USMS is not currently hiring investigators (series 1811). Rather, we are hiring 082 series Deputy U.S. Marshals. Their duties tend to revolve around prisoner services (court, transport, cellblock, etc.).

Thanks for the info. Just curious, why is it that the U.S. Marshals do not qualify for LEAP?

There are a whole bunch of federal law enforcement agencies, but the only agency I know a little bit about is the FBI. To be most competitive you would probably need something more than a BA in CJ. Right now the top skill is linguists, closely followed by computer science-they will waive 3 yrs work experience for CS degrees, and then the usual Law, Accountants, Prior Law Enforcement, etc. They list Military too but I believe that is Officers mainly. That is the FBI and there are a lot of 1811 positions out there.

I do have a buddy with an identical background to you (4 yr Marines, BA in CJ with a minor in Spanish) it took him forever to get to the Poly phase of the USSS, but he was being considered.

Either way, good luck finishing your degree. If you have time left minor in Farsi :D It can only help!

Like Switchback I am bias about my Agency, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Division of law Enforcement Services. We have 1811 Special Agents who investigate Title 18 crimes on Reservations across the US

We do have a Indian Preference hiring policy in place.

However, there are some wonderful positions with Dpeartment of Interior, thorugh Bureau of Land Management, Park Service, Forest Service and Interior Office of Inspector General.

Good Luck and If I can provide some assistance, please let me know

Apply to a whole bunch of them.

I got two invitations to the FBI's Phase II with my math background. (Of course, I got two two invitations because I failed my first attempt...but passed on my second.)

Apply for every 1811 postion you can. Hey SWITCHBACK? Why is it I have my LEAP scheduled for me. I do not know if you know this but FAMS have their leap scheduled for them a month in advance. The reason I was told was that we do not do investigations so they have to scedule us 10 hour work days. Now I would fire back and say Why the hell are we on leap then? I think they are to damn cheap to pay us overtime.

By definition, LEAP CANNOT be scheduled! It's for unscheduled work... to be available. I've heard of this being done, but it is way off base.

Mine's not scheduled, but I have still been averaging 70 hours a week. The joys of working a task force... and you will get NO complaints from me!

Exactly, there has been a long running lawsuit based on this type of thing. You should ask your bosses if they have ever heard of the law firm of Lipsett and Berstein. They have only made about 75 million dollars filing suit against agencies for violations of the Fair Labor Standard Act.

    1. Complete that degree
    2. Take Spanish & Accounting - only FBI/ICE/CIA would be interested in Farsi
    3. There are some 70+ agencies that train at FLETC, plus FBI & DEA at Quantico. Start thinking about the kind of work (indoor, outdoor) and part of the country (Mexican Border, California, Deep South) you want to work in. Then start looking at the agencies.

I did 27 Years with U.S. Customs (now ICE) as an 1811 Sr. Spl. Agent. Enjoyed almost every day of it. When I was teaching at the academy, we had transfers in from every agency - FBI, DEA, IRS, CIA, you name it. Other folks find a home in those agencies and love it. If you find one you think you'll like, after you read everything on their web site, go to an office and ask to talk to one (or more) of the agents. Each has their own 'corporate culture'.
