    Internship

I am going through the process now of choosing an internship for the fall semester. I have to go to interviews and things of this nature. I have four choices on the federal level; DEA, TSA, USM, and Department of Homeland Security/ US Customs/ Immigration. DEA and Dept of Homeland Security are down in Boston, and going down to Boston three days a week seems a little iffy at this pt in time. I am thinking TSA or Marshals, but your opinions on the other 2 would be great. Which one of these four would you take if you were in my position? Those of you who are Marshals, could you tell me what your interns normally do in the past if you have worked with any? Thanks

I was an intern with the US Marshal Service (1983) at the Western District of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City. My daily duties included working with the Criminal Clerk on numerous projects, mostly administrative tasks ......

I did have the opportunity to assist the Deputy's with prisoner escort to court, jail, fingerprinting and book in prisoners, etc.

I am sure alot has changed with the Intern Program........

If I were in you shoes I would choose the Marshal Program. I learned alot and owe the Service alot for the time they spent working with me. I would not be in the postion I am in today without the experience from the Marshal Service

Having done an internship with the US Marshals Service in the summer of 1998, I can give you the following advice:
-Apply as early as you can. I applyed in the fall of 1997 with them because there are so many requests and the office I worked out of only allowed one or two at a time.
-Check with all of the agencies you are interested but don't be surprised if you aren't allowed to do one with them. I know some agcencies offer them, some don't. I wanted to do one with NCIS the following year but at the time they only offered them to Grad Students.
-Apply to all the agencies that you are interested in....and do not forget local and state agencies. I had a friend that did one at the local PD where we went to college at and he ended up getting hired by them when we graduated. They paid for his academy and he hit the streets....and 5 years later got enough experience to get on with the US Postal Inspectors and is very happy.
    Good luck.
