    Federal Pay Tables

I did a little searching to see the way the federal government pays their enforcement officers. As a police officer you start out at GS__ what? That's the first question, then what is a step? I understand that the grade is merely a promotion but are the steps just years? I see that it goes up to only 10 so I am thinking that maybe it is not years and is something else. Just a little curious and hoping some of you federal employees could enlighten me. Have a good one

    Generally, but not always,
One year as a step 1 gets you a step 2
one year as a step 2 gets you a step 3
one year as a step 3 gets you a step 4
two years as a step 4 gets you a step 5
two years as a step 5 gets you a step 6
two years as a step 6 gets you a step 7
three years as a step 7 gets you a step 8
three years as a step 8 gets you a step 9
three years as a step 9 gets you a step 10

That's the way it is in my agency. But, you also have QSI step increases, up one, over two, policy, and a bunch of other things.

I've been a fed since 1988 and I still don't get it all, either. The personnel manual looks like the New York phone directory. :D

You start out at the GS level your agency considers appropriate. The Journeyman level for Department of Defense Police is GS5. This is a "Non LE retirement position". The US Department of Veterans Affairs Police has a journeyman level of GS6. Also non LE retirement. There are variations of the Jman level due to location and political pull. The big difference is locality pay which makes the numbers rather silly. In addition some agencies have rather extreme interpretations of the rulebook that mucks it up more.

Any questions? Never mind the answer will change next week.

LMAO @ journeyman level depending on political pull and location!!!!!!!

Journeyman is determined by OPM, based on the job series and duties of the specific position.

This may be true but does not change the fact that the GS5 is journeyman for DOD Police and the GS6 is the journeyman level for the VA Police unless you are at several VA Stations where they were able to get OPM to make it a GS7 level due to the supposed "Job Descriptions" submitted for the approval.

The DoD and VA are very similar in policies and work rules except the VA does not require the same level of training. Unless you are at some of those more esoteric DoD locations where training is unheard of.

    Sad but true.

I am still waiting to hear where the political pull comes into it.

Well it works like this. You are the chief at a VA with retention problems. The locals are making more money than your officers, The special pay options for retention or other purposes from OPM are not enough. You go to the assistant director and they are not supportive. You go to your congressman, a Dem with labor ties. The Reps office enquires about the officers situation and the disparity in pay, The assistant director finds a new reason to support the "new job descriptions". They go to OPM and get a little support from that reps office as well. A few months later there is a general upgrade in the service at that facility.

I make be in error but it seems to me that political pull might have a little to do with that situation.

There are other cases in the VA system where certain officers won in court the LE Retirement pay and coverage. Of course that does not mean that other officers doing the same work and circumstance will get it. They need to start all over and fight just as hard and have a little pull with their support people as well.

    It happens.

Yeah, that's a new one on me, too. You would have a riot at my shop if anyone tried to pull something like that.
