    newbie- DUSM

I would like to first let everyone know a little about myself. I am 27 years old, from Mississippi, enjoy just about any outdoor activity, and single. My goal is to become a Deputy U.S. Marshal. I took the test in June of 2001 in New Orleans and got my results in December of 2001. Time went by slowly (as it does when you want something so badly) and out of the blue in late July of 2003 I was contacted and told that, if still interested, to be in Phoenix, AZ in August. I went to Phoenix where I went through EVERYTHING in a one day event! Started with the interview and finished the afternoon with the PT. A week later a nice lady from the DOPM visited and conducted my background check. Two weeks after that I retested on PT in Oxford,MS and passed with flying colors! I contacted them aproximately one month ago and was told to be expecting a phone call any day. So, I waited and waited, and waited some more until finally this week I contacted them once again to only find out that my name hasn't been reached on the list for the May academy and was also told that ('more than likely') I would not make the August academy either.

I am disappointed to say the least, but I want this so badly that I will stick with it until I get the call that I have waited years to receive! Has anyone else been going through the same thing as me?

I know several of the Marshals in the Northern District of Mississippi and they tell me to hang in and I will get the call! Any advise?

    Thanks

    Hughm

I think your buddies in N/MS have it covered. Just be patient. And use the time to prepare for the academy.

It's a slow procedure. Back in the day, when you tested well, you got the call sooner. I scored very well on the exam and still had to wait just short of a year and a half.

And you're not a newbie yet. Don't jynx yourself. You're getting close to the end of fiscal year on an election year! ;)

Thanks for the reply Switchback! I was a little misleading in the title... meant that newbie thang as new to the forum.

How long have you been a DUSM? Are you stationed in LA with the Special Ops group?

Do you know any 082's? I would like to find out what a typical day is like at the academy since they have changed it up some. As I understand it, mornings are classroom teaching and after lunch is 'hands-on' activities and PT. I would like more detail on both of these aspects if I can find an 082 to ask.

The Jackson office now has 2 082's and the Chief from Oxford had a meeting last week and was told that not only are they not getting anyone, but they are overstaffed! My friend says that the reason for this change in head count is due to HQ counting supervisors up in each district as working marshals.

Seems like it is time for someone to head to the hill in DC! ;)

I've been on 8 years. Started in a very large (meaning crappy place to work) district and transferred to a suboffice a few years after getting on. I am still there and life is good.

With the recent review, many (if not most) districts are overstaffed. The ones that always need people are the larger districts (S/NY, E/NY, DC, etc.) and the border states.

SOG has DUSMs all over the country. There is only a small cadre of full-time SOGers down at Beauregard. I am not one of them.

Regarding your typical day at FLETC, I may not be the best source of info. However, the days tend to have a good mix of thinghs and you will get your schedule the first day there. They follow the schedules very closely.

My training was completely different than that of the 082s. I had 9.5 weeks of CI school, run by FLETC. It had PT a couple times a week, firearms about 12-15 times some DT, etc... but mostly classwork. It was not until that last 6 weeks of BDUSM school that we started spending 1/2 - 2/3 of each day doing firearms, DT, and fit. The DUSM part is run by the USMS and is much more physical. I would not sweat it, though. I found the hardest part about FLETC is getting there.

We have 082s in my office. Like any group, there are a couple good ones and a couple that should not have the job. I could say the same for the other 1811 in my office too. LOL
