    Last Chance question about FPS

I have asked several questions on this board about the FPS and received valuable information pertaining to them, and I would like to thank everyone who has assisted me in my quest. Monday, April 12th, is my deadline for accepting a job offered by the FPS as a Police officer in Atlanta. So my last question is do the police officers for the FPS, patrol throughout Atlanta and the surrounding areas, locating federal buildings under their jurisdiction, or are they assigned specific buildings, or building. I wanted to get an idea of how they work the patrol aspect as it relates to local law enforcement. For example, in the county I work, the county is broken up into eleven zones, and an officer is assigned to a specific zone each day he works, to answer calls within that zone. Does the FPS work on a similar basis. Thanks in advance and I promise this will be my last FPS question. :D

I also want to know about the FPS. How do I find jobs announcements for them? I used to see them in OPM but when they joined the office of homeland security the posting's disappered can anyone point me it the right direction?

    Thanx
    PPB :D

I can at least answer that question. PPB the FPS is still handeled by GSA HR. So if you check under GSAJOBS you will find a host of jobs still being offered by FPS. Good luck.

Click here for the GSAJobs website. There are numerous FPS vacancies currently posted for positions nationwide. Positions are under "Public" and "Merit Promotion" sections of the website. Scroll drown to "Department of Homeland Security" for the FPS jobs.

I highly recommend checking out 911jobforums. There is some good FPS info there.

Also, you may find some useful info on this Yahoo Group with FPS info. It has some general info and is run by a friend of mine. :D

I know this is a bit late, but I can give you what information I can from my experiences. I work for ATF in downtown D.C. and we have FPS officers "guarding" our building. Essentially, all these poor guys and gals do is sit in their vehicle all day making sure that nobody parks a vehicle in front of our building, they don't really do anything that I would consider to be "real" police work. Like many of these Federal police, they are essentially glorified security guards. I think much of what they do varies upon their location, but from my understanding, their primary jurisdiction is Federal property. That being said, I wouldn't expect you to be doing traffic stops or handling any "real" dangerous situation. Again, keep in mind this is just from what I see of the ones at my building, maybe other officers at other locations do more work.

    For what it's worth...

I work for GSA FPS and well what victory1500 said is true depending where you are station. I work down in FL, so yes there’s not much to do as a uniformed officer. Once you get to work as an investigator things get a little better. For the most part federal jurisdiction is very small unless you’re in DC. There you get to do traffic as well as other police work that just doesn’t exit anywhere else for FPS. Most of the officers that work for FPS look like Wakenhut security guards in the sense that they are overweight. In some places FPS contracts private security guards to do screening for FPS so they actually get to do even less. If you’re young charging type of fellow working for FPS is not for you. Most of the officers that work with me are in their late 40’s and early 50’s. They love it cause is perfect for an older person who just wants a pension plan to retired.
Most federal LE jobs for uniformed officers are about the same. Your jurisdiction is within a building or to a federal compound and nothing more.

    Ric,
I have already started with the FPS in Atlanta. They seem to have a jam up organization at least in Atlanta. They can go anywhere in Georgia and they are currently entering into a concurrent jurisdiction agreement with the city, allowing them to assist and enforce state law within the city of Atlanta. These officers here do traffic stops and remain constantly busy. They have take home rides and the whole nine. I don't know if this only occurs in Atlanta, but so far, I am not disappointed with giving up local law enforcement after ten years. Thanks for the reply.

You are absolutely right I completely forgot about concurrent jurisdiction sir. Some cities give federal agencies concurrent jurisdiction to help or enforce local laws. Where I’m at they don’t. But we still ride our cruisers anywhere we want and use city reserved LE parking also since we’re police no matter what. I’m glad you have joined our team good luck for the future sir.

    Ric,

Thanks. I am really looking forward to working with FPS. Have you given any thought of transferring to the Atlanta area, or are you content in Miami?

Dlt, as stated GSA is the General Services Administration and FPS is the Federal Protective Service. However, FPS is now under DHS, Department of Homeland Security.

    Dragonspider,

Which HEAT unit are you apart of? I saw your picture of the HEAT car. I was on the Henry County HEAT unit for 2 and half years.
