    Daily workload of an 1811

I am not being deemining about the important job 1811 do on a daily basis with my following question, but after reading many threads on this board I get the impression that the job of an 1811 is for the most part dominated by paper work.

Is this the case for the most part of he daily job of a 1811 or does it depend on the unit one might be working on at a particular agency. Can one say that an 1811 is for the most part a desk oriented type of job for the most part and the view potrayed on TV and movies (kicking down doors, fast car chases, etc.) is a small percentage of what an 1811 will experience in a career.

As mentioned an another board where you posted this questino, it really depends on what agency and even what position in an agency. An OIG may do very little BUT paperwork... some do not even carry guns!

I can speak to the USMS very well. Some 1811s spend a lot of time in court, tranpsort and other prisoner-related duties. Others are more fortunate, and are assigned to full-time fugitive investigations. Most of our investigations are NOT prosecutorial, meaning we need to document a lot less. I am part on a fugitive task force and I spend about half my time each day doing reports, etc. Most spend less than this, but I am in charge of this crew and and extra reports to write each day, review others' reports and assign/manage cases. Most other Agency's 1811s would be hard-pressed to have such a good a$$-kicking to paperwork ratio!

I know some buddies of mine in the FBI and ATF spend a lot more time at their desks. Then again, so do a lot of my colleagues in the main USMS office here.

Bottom line is that it varies!

An 1811 is the classification for a federal criminal investigator... such as me (Deputy US Marshal-CI), FBI SA, DEA SA, ATF SA, USSS SA, etc.

BTW, SA= special agent... before I get in trouble again.

I am usually not too active on there. The 082 questions tend to rule things in regards to the USMS and there are several 082s on there that know that better than me. Never been an 082, so I leave it to them in most cases... unless I catch a blatant misrepresentation (which happens occasionally).

Actually I just cut and pasted the question from someone else who posted the question on another board to this board. Easier than retyping the whole thing.

It seemed like a good question to ask on this board to see the responses.

Like Switch said, it depends on the agency, where, what group/squad/team you are on etc. I have the ability to manage my own time pretty freely. Today for instance I went to work expecting to write a couple of reports and then go out and interview a suspect in the afternoon. Instead, I went in and at 10:00 a.m. was on my way two hours south to track down an individual and interview him concerning a new case. I am with Dept. of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Legacy Customs).

    cmras24,

Have you a chance to find out either why people like the FBI IS job or dislike it?

I am also in the final stages of the process.

It comes with the job and experience. The door breaking window smashing take downs are usually left to the uniformed branch of any LE division. This is not to say the 1811’s are not up for it. But you have to realize that most of those positions are taken by veteran fed cops or agents. I do investigations for GSA and I’m a plain clothes officer. Most of the investigations that are place upon me do not involve repealing or chasing anyone. Some are economic crimes; others are just background investigations for new employees. Does it get old,, yes it does, but I had my fun while I was in uniform.

The inside/outside ratio can vary even in an agency depending on what type of group you are in.

When I was in Baltimore, I was assigned to a Heroin Task Force and we did about 200 high risk search warrants a year and made almost 300 arrests one year. But, if we got forty grams of heroin we all celebrated.

In Miami, I was in a group that made 137 arrests the first year I was there, but two of them were the largest drug traffickers ever extradited to the USA. There was a lot more paperwork to get them locked up than there was to lock up some heroin mope with ten grams on him.

In my agency, you can work in a state/local task force and do arrests and raids until you are sick of them. You can get in a roving MET team and do U/C buys for two months and then have a round up in a town with minimum paperwork unless you are the case agent for that deployment.

It just depends on what you want to do. When we are arresting street mopes, our paperwork to door kicking ratio is loaded to the door kicking side. When we are going after high level international criminals, it takes a lot of paperwork to lock these guys up. You are not going to catch them standing in the warehouse with 1000 kilos very often.

I personally have found that when I was younger, I enjoyed raids, search warrants, chasing rock monsters through the projects and undercover assignments more. Now, I get more satisfaction spending a few months hunting down a good violator who thought he would never get caught.

You have to find what floats your own boat.
