    Department Of Homeland Security Background

When someone clears security thats always a good thing, Say if someone did not clear security for the Border Patrol, Does that mean there is also no clearance for customs inspector, Immigration enforcement agent, and Immigration inspector. I know its a strange question, But I thought its an important question to ask. They all get investigated by OPM. Hopefully there someone on the board who knows alot about OPM backgrounds and can answer this question.

I can tell you that is a very good question. Not all are OPM investigated. Some are Customs investigated. The merging of the agencies implies future changes. It really all depends on why you were turned down and at what stage of the process. As the consent form indicated, information may be shared between agencies. Treasury looked at some things that Justice didn't focus on and Justice looks at some things Treasury didn't. If you sold cocaine, don't waste your time applying to another agency. If BP turned you down because your uncle has multiples for hiring illegal aliens, Customs might still be interested in you to check bags at Kennedy Airport.

    Wolve,

I believe it depends on the type of security clearance you need for each individual job. Most jobs within Homeland ask that you qualify for a secret or confidential clearance. Unless your specfic position requires a particular clearance that you don't qualify for, it is possible some of the other positions within the same agency may require different clearances which you are qualifed for.

DHS now shares all background information. OPM does do some of the background information but the hiring agency completes the process. In my workplace with DHS we have investigators from ICE, BCBP, and VA Police visiting for any information that we have for the applicant. Most of the applicant information is cross checked at OPM for type of clearance and last update if any.
    Hope this helps.

    Question background investigation time

How long does it take to complete a background investigation on the average? I sent mine in for CBP about 3 months ago. I got back the entire package about 2 weeks ago to put my SS# on one page that I forgot it on the bottom (talk about picky) and i sent it back into them. The background is the last thing I'm waiting for a Pass on CASS. Any ideas?

It depends on many factors like your background itself: references, prior employers, prior clearances (if any). Could take a couple months to a couple years. Sometimes they'll even send you to FLETC without completely finishing your BI. Only thing to do is "hurry up & wait" now. Your time will come though. Good luck.
